So you feel he should just be let go free, no punishment for the deaths that he was an accessory too? No punishment because he evaded punishment for 70 years?

This man guarded luggage and collected money he didn't help to kill anyone. It's not surprising he was convicted in Germany a place where if you even question the number killed in the holocaust you can wind up in prison. Besides had he not done those things he would have been shot on sight. If you were given the choice of doing the job you were told to do or be executed which would you choose?

Yeah, and had Germeny actually won, he'd be considered a national hero. Victors write history both figuratively and otherwise. Not that I condone one thing or the other but yeah getting sent off to jail at that age for something your government did is quite something.

Side note: gotta admit, timing is quite nice here. Iran plays nice and suddenly the holocaust gets waved in our faces.

ATS nonsense strikes again! In order for this to even have a miniscule chance of being the case it requires coordination between everyone at the court with everyone in the Iran negotiations that means all the witnesses, lawyers, judges with all the politicians, civil servants etc of US, UK,Russia , France,China, Germany and Iran

Come on, reality check!

The difference is whether or not it becomes a media circus and all the talk from the talking heads. Which obviously remains to be seen.

Top story on CNN:

Auschwitz Nazi officer Oskar Groening gets 4-year

www.cnn.com...

National or international discussion always seems to be dictated by the media. Yeah no story within the story here.

Comparing the American civil war to Germany and the Holocaust in WW2 is ignorant.

No I say even after his death and when he's totally rotted in his grave, we should still get him outta there, burn his bones and show him that the justice can still be done on someone who guarded luggage and checked pockets. Meanwhile we can turn our heads on the other side and close eyes and ears when the real criminals and them who ordered those crimes were taken to US under Paperclip, Sunrise and Overcast. But what do I know, I must be an holocaust denier...

I have often wondered why soldiers from other Wars are not brought to "Justice" obviously other atrocities have taken place with many, many deaths. Take Iraq. We invaded it under false pretenses and I have heard possible as many as a million were killed or hurt, if that is wrong number, then more than should have been. Why just the Nazi's? Aren't soldiers just following orders, regardless how terrible?
Ordering Infantry to shoot people to me is barbaric. War is barbaric.

No justice is being served by sending a 91yr old man to jail, it's a complete waste of time. What i would like to know is, when are these same courts going to charge Bush/Chaney for war crimes in Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen.

Time is running out! What is Israel gonna do when there are no more old Germans left to have arrested in dog and pony show trials?

Oh, that's right, they have already set up Iran as the next threat to worldwide Jewry, to be hounded and poor little Israel must be protected from them.

Sure they'll still find ways of screwing more money out of other states too in reparations! Funny how all the other people who lost everything in the war, including family, never got a penny, but one group is special and must get their pound of flesh!

According to the source the charges relate to the period between May to July 1944 , seems like he was only there for a couple of months.

I remember watching a Documentary a few years ago about the Nazis and Oscar was one of the guys they interviewed, He told his story and never hid anything...I bet he regrets it now as this docu was probably the catalyst to his arrest and conviction.

In the Documentary they also interviewed a woman who reported one of her neighbours for being..wait for it..."A bit strange and probably a commie or something"... The interviewer showed her the document that she signed, The Woman she reported was soon arrested and sent to a concentration camp where she was murdered. Do you think this woman/snitch should be arrested for her part in her neighbours Murder.? I doubt very much she will.

We can count in the hundreds how many Nazis were convicted and sentenced to death for there part in the Holocaust, we can count in the tens of thousand those Nazi killers who walked free. including This Guy

There are countless German civilians who gave people up, spat on and abused and facilitated in the murder of thousands of innocents. Nothing was ever done about it.

The Nuremburg trials were nothing but a Circus.

I think it's wrong, he obviously had nothing directly to do with the atrocities there....where does it end? When every last serving soldier for Germany during the war is locked up?

He probably hasn't got much time left in this world, and whilst I am strongly against the term "I was just following orders", in this case I think it applies.....did he even know what was truly going on?

Yeah, after Molotov-Ribbontrop and the Katyn Forest and the Gulags and numerous other atrocities, it's rather ironic that the Soviet Union was on the prosecution side.

Yeah, He knew exactly what was going on. He stole from the loot and goodies he was supposed to bag up and send back to Berlin. The Gestapo raided The camp whilst Oscar was traveling to Berlin with the goodies. A few of his friends were caught with stolen loot. Lets just say it didn't turn out to well for them. Russian front. some chose to commit suicide.

The Gestapo had sealed up Oscars Locker, they needed Oscar to be present before they could open it..(yeah, i know, they had rules) Anyway, when he got back from Berlin he was told what was happening and to get rid of his loot. He simply opened up the back of his locker and removed anything incriminating before the Gestapo turned up..

He was also on record as having asked several time to be relieved of his duties at Auschwitz. He was denied three times.

This is a reflection of the whole pony show that the trials were. Seriously given safe havens and jobs in the US, some given even social security as well.

oh if we broaden the conversation to that, my only concern with the confederate flag is the dukes of hazzard.
flags are just things that are put there to make us think that we are not the same, that your (i assume) stars and stripes somehow means you are different from me and my green white red one.

the problem i have is there is a difference between justice and parody of justice, and this feels like parody, frankly. after he lived a long and great life let's put him in jail for 4 years even though he has about 50 showers left.
and there is another problem, but this is more a personal opinion.
The dude was just doing his job. He really didn't have that many options, just following orders, they probably would have killed him anyway if he refused to do whatever he was doing.
By that same logic we should jail the soldiers that went looking for WMDs, since we found out it was a lie, the lives lost there were lost for nothing...but you would not blame the soldiers.
I hope you get what i mean by that.

My original statement was meant that like the swastika in Germany, the only place for that flag is in a case in a museum.

He's had this on his conscience for 70 years, and will for the remainder of his life. I think that's plenty of punishment for someone who was just a forced low level soldier. At some point you have to simply admit that the injustices suffered will never be made right and let everyone move on with their lives, especially their descendants who have many years left, while all the perpetrators will be gone in the next decade.

But I thought it was Germany not Israel. And can someone please explain to me the logical argument (keyword logical) of making it a crime to deny the holocaust. For the sake of arguing, even if it is as true as the history books proclaim and someone thinks otherwise, how is being stupid a crime.

Germany takes it extremely seriously, you can even see it in how they're treating the Greeks with their insistence on financial reforms that will over time prevent the sort of financial ruin that brought a man like Hitler to power. If you take something seriously enough, it's pretty natural that a zero tolerance policy will develop.

Generally, whichever side loses the war will be put on trial if they did something seen as war crimes. For example we imprisoned A LOT of Japanese for the barbaric medical experiments they carried out. Then we let the ones heading up the research go if they handed over their files. Exactly the same way we treated the Nazi's. Compared to what the Japanese did, the Germans were downright humane.
