I guess it makes sense that it would be offensive to someone who believes in Ra.
a reply to: arpgme

Why should they mind? RA would have no problem either. S/HES way above that petty bs.

Im offended that you're not offended.

Absolutely understand, it is not like companies use the gods' names in vain right?
a reply to: Jonjonj
I perceived no vanity. Here's the punchline: GOD is the FARMER.

In my reality, none was meant. You made it to fit how YOU feel, not me, beloved.

In reality, you've completely missed the sarcasm. It was subtle in nature, yet liberally (see what I did there?) applied.

Oh well.

How about the sickening Cadillac Commercials that only say "It is a weak Man who urges Compromise".

Pig Wagons.

It is a car company...hmmm.

As a non-religious person I could give precisely no F~~~s about what gods they use in advertising, my point was obvious I think. Use a god to sell a product. It is not like the subject of the OP is the first time, right?

Never mind.

Certainly, I will endeavor to reach a higher standard of comprehension, in hopes of someday better understanding the nuances of your colloquial manifestations.

Not sure about sarcasm but a class or two in irony would not do you any harm at all.

You mentioned "vain." The speaker was referring to a farmer - not a truck or a company, or himself. That's the way I viewed it. a reply to: Jonjonj

Ah ok, I see the problem. The expression "to use god's name in vain" means to use the name for a purpose that does not correspond to god. I am guessing you don't know the expression so I understand your misunderstanding.

Just out of curiosity ... your title asks why these commercials are allowed ...

Allowed by whom or what?

"Don't take the lords name in vain"....means don't invoke his name without cause. and, for the most part, no one is worthy of having cause

the frequent saying, "god's gonna strike you down with lightning", or even the casual, 'you will be condemned to hell" is using gods name in vain. it is a case of a lowly human assuming to have insight into the mind of the almighty.

in reality, its a commandment to keep from happening what has happened countless times: zealots punishing those who they don't believe are worthy. its funny that you hear that commandment from someone right before they condemn you to hell for saying something like "my god becky, look at her butt". people who have no understanding of the religion they are a part of.
