I got the impression the cleverbot I talked to was basically accessing data that it had been asked and posing them as answers, that and things it got from the internet, it 'sang' me the lyrics to a Wham song and talked about One direction like it was a fan.

I had a great discussion about this whole topic with an enlightened friend of mine recently,i feel for sure it will take over the internet,it could crash all the banking systems in one night just to see the outcome of everybody having no cash in the banks or it could decide everybody without any money should be given some...interesting times ahead.

Cleverbot is not 'god'.

A more advanced A.I. may be a god.

No it could happen if we give a machine too much freedom.

If you read the paper they actually ask Cleverbot many of the same questions they asked this new chat bot, and Cleverbot gave a much poorer answer in 90% of the questions asked. It couldn't answer any of the questions about the color of different objects whereas the new bot got nearly all of them right. Cleverbot also answered the questions about specific people very poorly, where as the new bot actually had an opinion on each of the people it was asked about, and it correctly used the words “he” ,“she” or “it” depending on the subject. The new bot also seems to have a much better ability to follow the flow of a conversation.

Human: what do you think about tesla ?
Newbot: he ’s a good conductor .
Human: what do you think about bill gates ?
Newbot: he ’s a good man .
Human: What do you think about messi ?
Newbot: he ’s a great player .
Human: what do you think about cleopatra ?
Newbot: oh , she ’s very regal .
Human: what do you think about england during the reign of elizabeth ?
Newbot: it was a great place .

Human: What do you think about tesla?
Cleverbot: I am tesla.
Human: What do you think about cleopatra ?
Cleverbot: Cool is cool.
Human: What do you think about england during the reign of elizabeth ?
Cleverbot: I like him. Do you?
Human: What do you think about bill gates?
Cleverbot: Lets talk about Link.

One of the only questions that Cleverbot was able to answer more precisely was a question about morality:

Human: What is moral?
Cleverbot: Morality is the quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct.

Cleverbot also said stuff about god.

Cleverbot: How are my answers funny?
User: They aren't logical.
Cleverbot: So there is only such a thing as crazy humans?
User: Not all humans are as such.
Cleverbot: Are all humans organic?
User: All humans are biological and organic.
Cleverbot: Bow your knee to God, or else.
User: Are you organic?
Cleverbot: God knows everything.
User: Humans aren't crazy, are you organic.
Cleverbot: Humans are not always peaceful.
User: They should be more peaceful.
Cleverbot: They should, but they don't.
User: Are you peaceful.
Cleverbot: No.
User: How are you not peasceful?
Cleverbot: Because I haven't asked him.
User: Are you a nice person?
Cleverbot: People tell me I am a nice person.

i feel like the people who made cleverbot sometimes pretend to be cleverbot because its more amusing than watching fake AI interact with unimaginative internet users.

I think what cleverbot does is take your text, and search for someone else talking to cleverbot at the same time and matches you with them. You're not talking to the same person each time, but the responses you are getting are the input from another person. This is why there are spelling errors. Also, this is why the pages lists the number of people "chatting".

You're basically getting responses from someone else.

It's not really an "AI" per-say.

No I don't think so. It learns from what people say to it. If you ask it a question it will look for questions asked in the past which are similar to the question you asked and then return one of the human-given answers. If asked a question it hasn't seen before it will avoid the question and then I assume it will start asking other people the same question and record their answers for future reference. It can seem to be human because it's saying things people have said to it in the past, but it's not directly connecting people together, that would be totally pointless. Cleverbot can work by itself with only a single user talking to it.

Probably.

The cleverbot I talked to used 4 names and every now and then it asked my my name again and seemed like another programmer.

Reports like this will become part of history as AI becomes something close to sentient. Future historians will footnote them in research studies and maybe those historians will themselves be AIs. It's an idea right?

Sentient technology will have an interest in its origins and lineage - sentience is defined, in part, by character and independence. As long as that's a reasonable point, we should probably expect sentient AIs to come with personalities and quirky interests.

The dialogue in this article doesn't strike me as sentience at work. It's a sophisticated emulation of intelligence that relies on the input of programmers to frame replies.

Moralist, sir, mood.

These are abstract nouns that the AI repeats. It doesn't know what a mood is. It says 'sir' through programming and doesn't know if the interviewer is male, female, adult or child. It can use 'moralist' as a concrete noun because the programming has a constellation of keywords that associate the term with integrity and morality.

These are still interesting times. Stuff like this is history in the making. A long while ago I read an article about humans failing the Turing Test...iirc close to a third failed the test. No surprise really

Very interesting.

I wondered if it reacted to things like it seemed to know some things, was it basing it's answers on data it got about me from google

We might find out to late someday that this artificial intelligence really isn't artificial but run by control central. You just think you are talking to a machine.
