I am in no way, shape, or form against gun rights, but I find the thought of a bunch of armed, Christian conservatives absolutely terrifying.

Level of passion for a cause? What was Ghengis Khan, or Hannible or Alexander or Great Britton or the Japanese or the Vikings or Augustus Tiberius. No conquering was done based upon any religious conflict or cultural mismatch; it was all about land grabbing for resources they no longer had. Hitler was the exception (race extermination).
