Numbers of death are still rising

Indonesia Says Death Toll Now Over 94.000

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia - Indonesia increased its death toll from last week's devastating earthquake and tsunamis to 94,081 on Monday, raising the total number of people reported killed in 11 countries in the Indian Ocean basin to at least 137,321. Aid agencies have said the death toll was expected to hit 150,000.

I don't know if this has been posted yet as this thread is growing to large to scan the whole thing. It seems that a new problem has begun hampering recovery missions. There were several known mine fields that were completely washed away. Now, no one knows were the landmines have been deposited, and could be any where, posing a risk to relief workers.

I was just curiuos. Does anybody know if the tsunami's affected Australia at all? I havent and information from there but Africa is ever farther away so...

Thankfully Australia was not physically affected, although we share the greif and shock at this tradgety as the rest of the world.

actually, we have lost 12 lives and many are still missing, we were hit by a tidal surge in western australia (indian ocean) and 7 people were washed away with their camp, but fortunatly returned to the beach and their cars.

Edited for spelling.

Not to be overly paranoid, but this is a scary prospect although I highly doubt the truth in this...

What if...

The USG some how (I don't know how) caused this quake.

The Abraham Lincoln was already in the area (possibly based somewhere in Korea).

On CNN you see alot of American aid operations by the military...what if they used this to up their world image?

Just something we could ponder about

According to the latest figures reported by CNN (taking all individual countries into account), we're looking at 200,808 confirmed dead, with 42,157 still missing (includes some estimates, but all are "official" figures released by the respective governments).

I am interested in the role of authorities in all this, they knew about the tsunami hours before it actually reached the shores. Why didn't they act at all?! It is very disturbing.

The simple answer, is that 85% of the world's tsunamis happen in the Pacific Ocean, so there was no protocal in place for it. As the news came in, just figuring out how to get it out to people in time, likely took too long for it to do any good.

I can't help it, but I am still shedding tears. CNN showed a little indian girl who was talking about swimming from house to house looking for her parents, then she said she wanted her parents to know she was okay and she was looking for them.

I can't even begin to express the emotions that I feel over this. I want to go there just hold these people hands, offer my shoulder for them to cry upon and hold them and hug them.

The emotional and pyschological effects of this disaster is only now beginning to take shape and I fear many will not be able to ever overcome this tragedy.

I just had to add one eyewitness report I heard about. One guy saw this huge wave like a wall coming towards him. This sight was quite an eyeopener by itself. What really freaked him out was when he saw a big boat on top of that wave...

There are a number of islands no rescue teams have been to yet. They have flown over them and have seen no signs of life. And without any drinkable water survivors won`t last long. They might never know excactly how many have died, but it`s probably much more than the official number...

There was an aftershock "just" Magnitude 7.0. They say this "little" Mag 7 aftershock was just a one thousand strenght of the Mag 9 quake! Imagine that! That gives us a little clue about how strong that initial quake really was. First they got a Mag 9 quake leveling everything. Then they got the tsunami afterwards, and no roof to climb upon...

As terrible as this tragedy is there have been other disasters in recent times that have actually been worse - how quickly we forget.
Below are a few paragraphs taken from the Daily Telegraph (Australia)
December 31, 2004

Before the devastation wrought by Sunday's tsunami, the most recent big disaster had been in April 1991 when floods in Bangladesh claimed more than 139,000 lives.
On July 28, 1976, the earth opened and swallowed Tangshan city in the Hebei province in China.
When the dust settled, more than 242,000 were dead officially, although western experts estimated the number at 700,000.
The calamitous Tangshan earthquake came just six years after nature picked on Bangladesh, where a cyclone and tsunami killed up to 300,000 people.

A magnitude 9.0 earthquake releases energy equivalent to 32,000 megatons, or about 3,200 nuclear bombs the size dropped on Nagasaki, Japan.

That would be 1.6 million times the nagasaki blast which was 20 kilotonnes.

The Indonesian death toll alone is 210,000, not counting the other countries involved.

Oh my gosh, this is so sad. This is so sad
. A little baby boy who survived the tsunami is being claimed by NINE different mothers whose babies were lost in the catastrophe. One couple has threatened to kill themselves if they aren't given the baby, and another woman has threatened to kill the doctors if they do not give the baby to her.

Baby 81

I don't think I've read an article that better states the loss and desparation this has caused.
