From watching the Jaywalkin segment from the Tonite Show with Leno, I noticed he would often ask college students questions like,"who won the civil war?" and "is the sun a star or planet" and "which is closer to earth - mars or the moon". They had no idea of the answer. My question is - how the hell did they get in college in first place??

The average IQ is 100. Someone has to lower the average.

Because they teach children to memorize names and dates for testing, but they don't teach the history or knowledge.

Once the child forgets the names and dates, they have forgotten the lesson.

I think we focus to much on testing and too little on reasoning.

I find it worrying that some people use "u" for you and forget to use the apostrophe in "don't"

You know how dumb the average person is.
By definition, half of them are dumber than that.

The PC crowd have done that, lower the average LOL. When my son graduated grade 12, he was a 3.78 GPA, not perfect but pretty dame good, so he was honour roll material. Funny thing that happened on the way to auditorium for the awards... Out of the entire grade 12 classes of just over 500 students, 491 were on the honour roll. Now that's major screwed up! Either they were turning out a lot of really smart kids or the bar has been set way too f'ing low. Turns out, way too low and it's all because of this "you can't offend anyone or make them feel bad" crap and "everyone's a winner" garbage.

I taught my kid critical thinking and advanced math at an early age (5-10) and I find his high school disgusting and insulting. BTW, he finished on the honour roll for his degree as well, just above a 93% average.

When you think about it, north america is running on recycled money. Employees from one service industry buy from another service industry, nobody is making much of anything, at least nothing much original these days. Which begs the question, "Does the government really need smart people or just mindless drones and yes-twits?"

Cheers - Dave

So being on the honour roll is enough to get in most colleges?

Of course it isnt an accurate reflection of ALL college students. Maybe these dumb ones make up a small minority but come on, dont you think its frustrating and makes you angry hearing someone say they go to college and cant answer a simple question?

I'm 39 back in college working on my MBA and out of 30 "kids" in my polisci class, I was the ONLY one that could name the 3 branches on government! It got worse after that. After two weeks my prof pulled me aside and suggested I test out, as it was still before the cutoff. I said are you kidding me this class is worth every penny in comic relief! My class was about 1/2 Mormon as I'm in Utah and their absolute disbelief of how the "system" worked, it was awesome.

I don't think so, I believe they look at high marks or your ability to pay lol. There are a lot of idiots who have parents that have the ability to pay. Colleges and universities are only too willing to take their money. Over and over and over again, stretching a 4 year course into 8 years of paired repeats. They get to double their profits and since that is the way they teach ethics by example it's no wonder the world is a mess.

Cheers - Dave
