renting is already expensive enough to buy.

I certainly couldn't rent an equal place for even the price of my rather inflated mortgage.

To answer the OP, can you just switch the investments to utility bonds? Safer investment, especially as even if a collapse, these would be more protected than most. Kind of an essential thing.
