NORAD radar shows Santa heading for Canada
CTV.ca News Staff
Canadian CF-18 fighter jets are on "scramble alert" as they track Jolly St. Nick and his sleigh full of goodies. They've just been spotted off the
coast of Newfoundland, right in time for Christmas.
This latest sighting comes from the Santa tracker at the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD).
The big guy in red and his reindeer have already made trips down chimneys in New Zealand, China, Egypt and most recently France and England.
The most recent sighting has him somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, fast approaching Canada.
NORAD -- which protects U.S. and Canadian airspace -- is tracking Jolly St. Nick with its high-tech Santa cams.
Footage from the website, noradsanta.org, shows Santa and his sleigh flying over international landmarks and updates a map showing where he is at all
times.
In one scene from earlier today, Santa is flying 100 times faster than a high-speed bullet train in Japan.
NORAD uses four methods to capture Santa's flight across the skies:
About a dozen NORAD jet fighters in Canada and the United States are equipped with Santa Cams. These digital cameras capture still and video footage
of Santa as he stops at the different cities
Infrared-seeking satellites which spot Rudolph's bright red nose
A powerful radar system with 47 installations across Canada's North and Alaska
Canadian and U.S. jet fighter pilots who intercept Santa as he flies into North American air space.
This year, Santa Claus' personal friend Ringo Starr is acting as one of the honourary Santa trackers for NORAD as he flies over the United
Kingdom.
"I'm going to be operating one of Norad's Santa Cams and I'll try to get some high-tech images of Santa," said Starr in a promotional radio piece
for Norad.
It's the 50th Christmas season that NORAD has been tracking Santa.
It all began with a young boy who phoned NORAD to ask where Santa was. The commander on duty told him he better go to bed because St. Nick was on his
way to his town.
Last year, there were more than 577 million hits on the website. This year, they expect more than a billion. Children eager to know when Santa will be
arriving can also call 1-877-HI- NORAD for a progress report over the phone.
