it was a stunning tornado and photogenic for most of its life cycle which was about 15 minutes IIRC

could very well be real, but suffering from someone who doesn't know when too much image processing in Photoshop (or the like) is too much.

It's very dramatic, sure, but when it gets to the point where the viewer asks if it's real, then they've actually done the image a disservice.

I really like this photo of a tornado.
Obviously there's been some tweaking for the album cover, but I believe there is a credit for the original photo on the record sleeve. If I had my vinyl to hand I could give you that info, but I don't, so...

Edited to add (from Wikipedia):
On 8 July 1927, a tornado near the town of Jasper, Minnesota, was photographed by Lucille Handberg.[12] Her photograph has become a classic image,[13] and was used on the album's cover. The same photograph was edited and used for Deep Purple's 1974 album Stormbringer.

The album was worth buying for the sleeve alone IMO.
It was a bonus that the tunes were pretty good too.

The more I look at it the better it gets

The way the spout meets the clouds at the top looks incorrect. I'd say photoshop
