I've listened about this on NPR other day and one think that really made this f-up job is think that they spend lots of money on educating people of importance of use clean water and soap, yet those people did not have either to start with?! Just makes you sick and doubtful of helping any charity...

This pisses me off. I donate to MDA and encourage other martial artists this is a good organization that merits our attention. I have indeed wondered just how my money is spent, and I certainly hope it goes to all those kids-camps and other fun projects & activities that my money is said to have been directed. Anyone know how I might investigate further?

In the UK professional fund raisers for charities are allowed to keep 80% for running costs .

I always ask them for a statement as to where the money collected is used .
none as yet has produced one for me .

It's at least that much here in the states as well. I remember after 9/11 when Bill O'Reilly was on the attack on these organizations cuz they raised over a billion dollars for relief for the victims and they kept like 90% for themselves. That's just sick. People donate to these places in times of tragedy from their hearts and they sure as hell don't want these crooks keeping 90 cents out of every dollar for their "overhead!" They want that money to go directly to the victim of the catastrophes. If you want to help these people find a way to get it to them directly, don't donate to any of the major charities.

UW is greedy

"Why should you give money into pockets of greedy individuals who only make you believe they are doing this for a good cause? Only a fraction is being used for legitimate charity work."

If someone hasn;t already said it…

The red cross didn't give a half billion to the people of Haiti, they gave it to the government.

Its why they lived in squalor before the earthquake and why they still do.

All "charities" have an upward limit on their actual productive expenditures pursuant to their stated mandate. Somewhere around 15%. That includes NGOs and state programs.

No more than 15 cents out of every dollar donated or stolen is actually used for the stated purpose of the organization.

Be directly charitable to individuals, it is better for everybody.

I haven't done anything with the Red Cross since their selling blood fiasco back in the mid 2000's. Short version? When the red cross says "we need blood" after a crisis, they actually don't and they just want the extra blood so they can sell it to the Military, LA and NY for a great markup.

Trust me...they didn't give that half billion to the government. It's well known that they keep a very large majority percentage for their "overhead" and they don't deny that. If they collected a half billion ($500,000,000) then it's safe to assume that no more than $100,000,000 made it to Haiti.

As a former Salvation army volunteer I have a big problem with both sides of the argument.

"A few greedy individuals are on the take, let's make every member guilty by association." When I needed scans or tests A Salvo volunteer helped me immensely, she never pressured me for donations or anything-she did it out of the kindness of her heart and was one of the most kind hearted individuals you'll ever meet, so I repayed the favor by volunteering at their local store.

Sure they had some funny ideas about literature but they they delivered furniture free of charge and did removals free of charge. On the local level the red cross does fantastic things, and the higher echelons should be ashamed that some volunteers have to turn away people looking for food because there is no money to buy it.

Don't frown upon the red cross because they have a few bad eggs, frown upon the bad eggs. And if you wanna help, give to a food drive instead of giving cash.

I have read before that the Red Cross is very poor when it comes to financial accountability. I sometimes give money to Salvation Army. I don't know exactly how much of my donations go to actually helping people, but I think they have a better presence when it comes to the homeless and disaster relief than some other charities.

Any Americans here get hit bad by any of the hurricanes that have hit the south over the years? Have any charities actually come to hand out goods or survival gear afterwards? Who were they? If I do give out my money I would rather it go to a charity that has a presence when it's needed.

I know this is awful, but I couldn't help but laugh at the number of charities there that had "children" in the name.

We gotta help the children, man! Donate some money now!

I agree. I throw out the figure I did because that was the amount suggested by the thread. Your "safe to say" suggestion that they only give a percentage to a corrupt government to help after a disaster is well founded, Bernie Madoff showed us how greedy some charities can be.

I don't have as much problem with the red cross because they do in fact help other peoples during tragedy and wars, often the first to fly in to danger, land and dispense aid directly to the needy.

My point was that whatever aid Haiti received didn't make it to where it was needed. You agreed with that I presume.

Actually you are making very good point, and IRC is among those who really helped people.

Not sure what happened in this case, but would be nice if there is an independent investigation.

Remembering good old times of help with LIVE AID and concerts, I have DVD release and there is a list of things purchased with money from donations and concerts...

The Red Cross is busy accepting blood not building homes. What do they use all that blood for?
