It may have been sordid 100 years ago, but the recent history of HI is not.

That would depend on how you regard the workings of a state government dominated by the democrat party since statehood.

Well that could be another thread. I see no parallel between what China is doing to the Philippines/others and Hawaii or Alaska.

He talks about hypocrisy yet is fine with Chinese expansionism while saying America is evil for the same things.

So what that china is extending islands.

China is not building new islands just enlarging their own by a few miles which is a drop in the ocean.

Did you bother to read any of the articles? It's the equivalent of Mexico building an island off Canada and claiming everything in between. The territory isn't theirs to expand.

No. They are building new islands. They are building new islands where other countries already control the area. It would be like the US building islands near the coast of Africa and then claiming the entire Atlantic Ocean as well as the African Coast now belongs to us.

Let's not turn this into a thread where we disparage an entire group of people for no reason.

China does, but they haven't disclosed it and probably never will.

Kansai airport cost $20B, including land reclamation. They haven't broken it down to what the island itself cost that I've found but it gives an idea of a ballpark at least.

Pity because that would have given a indication of how much they would stand to lose investment wise.

And would have given some idea of intent to back down or not if it gets serious.

Their investment is nothing. It's the resources.

In talks with Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario, China insists that all of the Spratlys are theirs including those clearly within Philippine territory — and that their claim is non-negotiable. This bold assertion means that they put a very high value on those parts of Spratlys inside Philippine territory and appears from their actuations that they are willing to use force if need be.

Xinhua confirms that the target is to drill in 800 locations in the South China Sea (renamed by the Philippines as West Philippine Sea) — but does not specify where. The projected production is equivalent to $50 billion annually.

And that is just part of the resources.

I get that it is the resources.
But the investment is important to the decision making.

So far, the investment is small, comparatively speaking. They had almost no investment when they were first told to stop. This has nothing to do with their investment, it's their idea that anything they want in the area they can take, and the fact they have the power to carry out that idea.

It is when you have allies and treaty obligations to those allies.

And how is it not true? Do even basic research and you'll see it's true.

i think the uk goverment should step in here,we import loads of chinnese merchandise at a cheaper rate then what we can import american merchandise, due to an absurd import duty on american goods but not chinese.
so we could introduce a similar import duty on chinnese goods ,and apply economic pressure .we could also revoke the go ahead for this in the uk china to build uk nuclear reactors
so i think the uk is in a better position to apply this pressure.

if this pressure is ignored,
be a good place for the new uk aircraft carrier to get some battle experiance.

why because its 2015 and no country should be able to steal anothers resources

China is pushing for an isolated war, in order to take the focus off of their rising mainland issues.

They sure picked a great way to get that war going. smh

China is China's worst enemy.

Just on tonight here in Japan about the islands. China has a right to do what they want. If anything, those man made islands are going to be necessary when they start drilling for oil there. Funny how the world news isn't about ready to print the truth why they are being built. Oh, yes, can't sell arms to the neighboring countries that are living in fear of China making military bases there. China has no reason at all to install weapons of mass destruction, only Iraq did and used them. Chemical ones that is. But the news is that America is flying over their territory and breaking international law, but China has not even fired a shot at American spy planes.

OK, now you all know, it's about oil in the surrounding areas. Peace everyone. There ain't no war in the makings, unless it comes down to whose oil it really is and Text Red.

Can't believe how sleepy everyone is the days. I guess Yahoo, MSN and AOL are doing a great job of investigating.
