Now, here is an issue though. With LE meeting more and more heavily armed gang members, supplied by actions like Fast and Furious, how do we deny LEOs the weaponry to combat those bad guys?

Do what the UK does. Rather that militarise all your police just form a small heavily armed federal squad (preferably under a existing agency like the FBI, god knows you dont need another alphabet) to combat that stuff. Let that department handle those situation and ONLY those situations and let 99% of police be well normal police.

We have different groups within the FBI and US Marshals that target this.
But, they can't response as quickly as local PDs can.

Well USA bigger so response time going to be slower I guess.

Well its a trade off I guess do you want your PD to be military or sacrifice response times those extreme situations for a softer police approach?

Maybe the money saved in disarmament can pay for more border patrol officers and US Marshall’s?

Police you can call and they don’t turn up and shoot everything up

Maybe one day you will experience a humble police officer who is there to protect and serve

That works in a small nation like Britain.

America is too large for that approach.

Our individual states are bigger than most countries.

Hell west Texas has counties bigger than some of our states.

It would take hours to respond to situations that need immediate responses, even if there were one such team in every state.

I think most are missing the real point....

see:

...WASHINGTON – President Obama is banning local police departments from receiving a range of military-style equipment from the federal government -- from grenade launchers to bayonets to certain armored vehicles --
as he implements the recommendations of a panel that examined the controversial gear giveaways in the wake of the Ferguson riots.

the man is becoming easy-breezy with his dictatorial power...
(the 'recommendation' from a hand picked Panel not withstanding)

He started the police militarization policy by his decree and now he is amending the decree to remove a few items from the list of things to give the Loyal police forces wherever Obama has a loyal following (who will fire on the public when ordered...by either the DHS or the Military commanders of troops)

we are being acclimated to dictatorial whims and change of policy at the drop of a hat... with only one person..
this is not presidential fast-track authority at all ~~~~ NO, it is something more Sinister and Macabre

Apparently it also was for the county sheriffs as well .n my state , this military equipment went to the smaller counties and cities. I live in a town of 20000 and we received a Stryker APC for our SWAT Team. Trouble is , we dont have a SWAT Team. Basically it was on show in the town center for about 1 week then moved to a police vehicle building. I have not seen it since.

And that is the main issue.

Respect of the Constitution needs to be the process for those in charge of SWAT/SRT groups.

And a local District Attorney/AG needs to be involved as well.

You mean he's using the powers he gets as the representative elected by the people? GASP! Quick, someone do something! How could we let this president use all these powers that the presidents before him also had and used?

This may not get past your hate for Obama, but just an FYI, he didn't start the police militarization policy by a long shot. The program is called the 1033 program and it was started back in 1997 under Bill Clinton.

Something seems to be wrong with the quote tags and editing my post isn't helping so I wanted to add another post with a source.

en.wikipedia.org...

"The 1033 Program was created by the National Defense Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 1997 as part of the U.S. Government's Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services (DLA) to transfer excess military equipment to civilian law enforcement agencies."

I agree. We need to get the military mindset out of the heads of the police and get them back into the neighborhoods they are supposed to serve.

We'll see what, if any, effect this will have. You can take away equipment but it is much tougher to take away the attitude.

They never should have had this equipment in the first place.

It's a good start to ban giving this equipment to police forces, but we should also ask that they return any of this equipment that they already have.

From experience of teenage years in an inner city neighborhood just a few years beyond 68' riots with burned out storefronts and overturned hulks of automobiles still apparent we had officers on foot patrol along with volunteer citizen patrols.

This worked! and there was little serious crime along with neighborhood that was fairly safe to be on the streets. The officers were approachable and knew everybody.

Somewhere around late 70's the city closed the small substations mostly located in portable buildings on school properties and put officers in patrol cars.

Once that was done the neighborhood declined rapidly along with property value.

Today it is a no go zone.

That could change but it will not ever happen by having more "equipment" available.

I wonder if is too late already and is just a gesture more than a deed.

Already all the extra equipment from the wars in middle east has been bought by many counties and in many states.

But if the president is actually stopping all future equipment then I applaud him.

Now will this include spying equipment too.

I just updated my Steve Quale link....look what they say in the lead-in to perk interest in the story

...
Obama: No more tanks or grenade launchers for local police departments

: DOES THE SAME RESTRICTION APPLY TO THE DHS AND OR MILITARY BEING USED AGAINST CITIZENS-........ I THINK NOT!

the exact thing I mentioned in my post...BUT even the SQ site is skirting the issue of Obama behaving as a Lennin-Stalin-Hitler-Pol Pot....or any previous Dictator in our immediate past....

here is the story that was linked by the SQ site----- yahoonewsdigest-us.tumblr.com...
