I get the general impression that these alignment-related prophecies and calendric systems point to something more akin to archetypal/energetic "windows" of change. My understanding of the 2012 thing was that December 21st 2012 was "galactic midnight". But we are talking vast cycles of time, so it is still basically a little past midnight - hence the darkness and chaos...
