The Harper government is signalling its intention to use hate crime laws against Canadian advocacy groups that encourage boycotts of Israel.

....

If carried out, it would be a remarkably aggressive tactic, and another measure of the Conservative government's lockstep support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Ottawa Threatening Hate Charges Against Those Who Boycott Isreal

I don't usually start topics, especially ones on topics as volatile as Isreal, but this headline left me feeling particularly disturbed. It seems the Harper Government is attempting to use fear of law to quiet dissent on Isreal by threatening to charge any group that advocates a boycott on Isreal with hate crimes. Boycotting has long been a legal and peaceful means of expression in Canada and I don't like where this is heading.

This reeks of intimidation and in my opinion is a clear overreach of political power.

Man... That dude Harper is a piece of work, isn't he?

So, protesting Israeli policies by boycotting their products is a hate crime in Canada now??

OOOOOKay, then.

Canadians need to get on the stick and remove that festering boil.

It's that all right.

We need Pam Geller....that shining Bastion of Free Speech to go Canada

Pam Geller will courageously hold a " Draw an Israeli Caricature Complaining about Israel Boycott " Contest

I'm sure Pam Geller is as outraged by this assault on Free Speech as we are.

Who? (Yes I really know.) What has that got to do with Canada? We have no 1st Amendment.

Good luck with it.

I'm not liking what I'm seeing up north... Even less then what I'm seeing here in the states...and I didn't think that possible.

You think Harper is something? Cameron is a bigger fan of King Bibi than little Harper. He would happily kiss Benny's shoes.

Is that even possible??

As I said, good luck. We need some of that, too. Our elections are up coming in a year and a few months. ...and the crowd is not promising.

if anyone is "smart" and "conscious" and feel like boycotting israel then they are utter hypocrites unless they boycott the USA, Canada, UK, Luxembourg, France, etc because they all killed waaay more innocent brown people in recent years

You said it.

If a person or a business wants to boycott a country then so be it.

What happened to the free market anyway.

How the hell can boycotting a country be a hate crime? When governments do that, they call it sanctions.

I am a firm supporter of Israel, I've never made any bones about that.

But as much as I find it repulsive, protestors have a right, and to deny that right is tyranny.

No matter how you slice it.

This isn't about whether or not it's hypocritical to boycott Israeli product, and not boycott other nations products.

This is about a country, in this case Canada, threatening to make that a "hate crime". This is, strictly speaking, a freedom of speech issue.

If people wish to urge a boycott on a nations products for whatever reason, they should be able to, shouldn't they? Certainly they shouldn't have to worry about being brought up on Hate Crime charges...

My original post was made from my phone and the link was/is to the mobile friendly version of the article, perhaps that is causing the issue? I was able to access the link from my desktop PC just now though.

I think this may just be a shout out to the Right. After the PC's fell after 44 years in Alberta Steve may feel like he's under pressure and needs to bolster his electorate.

Hmm..still not working for me. I read it though. I have to say I'm not really surprised. So an ordinary citizen can't try to get people to put up their own sanctions against a country, but, our government can? I hope Israel stays on the good side of the Western countries, otherwise their human rights atrocities might not be ignored....

Can't wait for the election! I just hope people vote someone in, not vote someone out like they did in Alberta.
