The biggest ever asteroid that threatens a collision with Earth is due to skim past us in four days time on May 14th, 2015.

Astronomers are worried that the asteroid named 1999 FN53 could possibly collide with the Earth, which would be catastrophic in its impact, causing earthquakes, tsunamis and probable mass extinction.

Even though astronomers have calculated it will not collide with the Earth, the slightest deviation in its course could lead to devastation due to its close proximity.

In a statement NASA said: “1999 FN53 was discovered on 1999 Mar 31 by the Lowell Observatory Near-Earth Object Search (LONEOS).

“It has an absolute magnitude of 18.3 suggesting a diameter within a factor of two of 680 metres but otherwise its physical properties are poorly known.

Astronomers have named June 30 as Asteroid Day to highlight the dangers of Potentially Dangerous Asteroids (PHAs) hurtling through space.

Initiative co-founder Grigorij Richters warned there are thousands which have not been identified which could ”destroy life”.

He said: “It just takes one asteroid to completely destroy life, not just humanity, but all species.

Seriously doubt this will happen since the asteroid will be about 6,360,000 miles away from earth.

it is not listed on spaceweather.com, one is but too far away to be even bother with. put down the bong...maybe read something interesting....

Skim may be overstating it , from what I've read it will pass six million miles away .... the Moon is 238,855 miles away.

Well I do like a bit of good doom porn, and this one even came with a date (14th of May). Does not look like I'll have to wait long for this to blow over.

But they really should limit the work near when it comes to things like this. I don't call 6 million miles near, if it was only 300,000 miles not we're talking. They also say we should be safe as long as it does not change course, since NASA seems to know where it is and what's going in that area they should be able to tell us if there is anything in it's path that might change it.

a reply to: olaru12 yes, good book, start the thread, may have to search to see if it has been done, tweak it, start it and lay off the doom, doom porn has been around since the beginning of time, it was commonplace, there was the year 999, when people were scared to move in their own shadow. enjoy the small particle of time you have instead of wasting all of the time waiting on it to end. My theory is that we are not even close to the end yet.....when do I get the weed???

Lots of doom about this one, good find. The only article I found with evidence as to the orbit isn't exactly clear to me. They somehow altered the way they do distance. Maybe there is another article yet to find. Nothing on space weather on this and that seems a little strange. They actually did not report another one that got close a while back until it already went by yet there were all sorts of official rock reports on that asteroid. Maybe they don't like being part of conspiracy evidence?

It seems to be many lunar distance away , not really good doom. But that is not even really clear as the closest approach dates don't match. Seems like something a little weird about this one.

It does seem to stay at the same distance AU for about three days, so it must have good brakes.

a reply to: crazyewok the interesting ones are less than a lunar unit...that's when you get interested. anything that comes that close can have effect on 2 objects, and impact/deflection is on that list...

The last two times we had near misses something hit us a day before or after...I forget.....remember that one in Russia all the car cams caught? Then nasa said it was an unrelated to the one they were tracking. Then the exact same thing happened the next time they were tracking one. So my prediction is something smaller will hit a day before or day after the 14th. I don't think NASA was being misleading I just thinking maybe these things have many smaller ones tagging along with them.
