Liquid mercury found under Mexican pyramid could lead to king's tomb
Researcher reports ‘large quantities’ of the substance under ruins of Teotihuacan in discovery that could shed light on city’s mysterious leaders
An archaeologist has discovered liquid mercury at the end of a tunnel beneath a Mexican pyramid, a finding that could suggest the existence of a king’s tomb or a ritual chamber far below one of the most ancient cities of the Americas.
Mexican researcher Sergio Gómez announced on Friday that he had discovered “large quantities” of liquid mercury in a chamber below the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent, the third largest pyramid of Teotihuacan, the ruined city in central Mexico.
A graphic of the tunnel:
They've also found some other curious artifacts, such as 'metallic spheres' at this site. The tunnel in question is turning up a trove of mysterious objects. The “large quantities” of mercury (some sources state "a river of mercury" could pertain to the production of red pigment from cinnabar for the coloring of jade objects and to decorate the bodies of royalty.
As a side note, there were also "rivers" and "lakes" of liquid mercury found at the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, I believe a model of the world to the extent known at the time to the Chinese, using mercury in place of water. See Flowing rivers of mercury (Philip Ball investigates claims that the burial chamber of China’s first emperor contains rivers of shimmering mercury.)

Not to get too off topic, there is an article on how liquid mercury may have played a much more vital role in the ancient Olmec society (precursor to the Maya or Teotihuacan) than just as a ceremonial decoration:
Lodestone Compass: Chinese or Olmec Primacy?
Multidisciplinary analysis of an Olmec hematite artifact from San Lorenzo, Veracruz, Mexico
The full article suggests liquid mercury was used to float a loadstone to act as a compass.

"The tomb of the first china emperor was said to have a map of the empire where all the water was mercury, would it be fun if the mercury in this tomb resembles china?"
Lol, the tomb IS under a pyramid... The same pyramid mound that the terracotta warriors are right next to. So.. the tomb has been discovered a while back. What is in question is what actually is in the still sealed main tomb chamber, and whether there are "rivers of mercury." They haven't opened the main chamber.
I've been to the terracotta warriors and at the base of the pyramid mound.

the 1hr 42 minute movie I linked covers the inferred lakes/rivers of mercury within the tomb...
they use ground penetrating radar and over 4,000 core samples of the sealed tomb to test for mercury... the concentrations of mercury were extremely high only within the football field sized tomb
there were two large areas of high mercury concentrations in a big area NW of center and another big area of high mercury S & ESE of the central tomb these two areas represent the ocean to the NW and the sprawling marshes to the S & ESE of united China in 210 BCE ...
the docudrama is first rate
I still think ancient china influenced S & central America...
but I think a more ancient knowledge was transferred to both Egypt & China (?Atlantis?)

This is just amazing.
Though, I cant seem to care anymore. Why bother. No one will admit that the totality of all the archaeological evidence points to an advanced civilization. All the smoking gun evidence is long gone and in some random person's private collection or buried in the Smithsonian.
All of it will be lost in a war or a heist or in a natural disaster and even the privileged will forget...
I just dont care anymore. Whats the point? Why would average people care? They have been removed from the equation and left as moronic recipients of the filtered news of any findings.
I just dont care. I hope time makes it all turn to dust....Our history has been stolen from us and believing in lies or half truths is repulsive.
I wish we would just smash it all, all museums, all artifacts, all text books, just erase it all. Who cares. Why stay tuned?
So less than a quarter of one percent of the worlds population can feel special in knowing the real truth?
We will never be told. We will never know. Just think about that.

Oh and its said to be under a pyramid too
Maybe the empire was a lill bigger that we though and that's why the tomb has not been found yet
I just wake up and dint read the op
Despite being over two millennia old, it has been argued that they would still function as effectively as the day they were installed. Furthermore, the presence of mercury would be incredibly deadly to anyone who entered the tomb without appropriate protection. Most importantly, however, is the fact that our technology at present would not be adequate to deal with the sheer scale of the underground complex and the preservation of the excavated artifacts.

It is found as Cinnabar, a mercury sulfate ore, it was prized for its color and liquid mercury was extracted from it by heating it in a furnace and condensing the fumes. It's also crucial for how ancient (and even modern) people mine for gold and gilding objects.

Not only how did they learned of the distillation process, but how did they know to apply it to this ore and they would then obtain a pure element such as mercury?

The ore was finely crushed, then placed into clay-lined, grass-fired furnaces until it vaporized and the gaseous mercury was trapped in a crude water-cooled condenser. Mercury has a very high specific gravity, making it easy to remove impurities with out going through a big process, just screed off the impurities from the top of the condensed liquid.
The ore itself seemed to have attracted the attention of the ancient very early on, Çatalhöyük shows it in use 7-8000 years ago. The ore's bright, distinct color and close proximity to the surface made it easy to find.
How exactly ancient civilizations came up with the condensing process I don't know, but nearly all of them had good working knowledge of distillation processes, it was essential for extracting oils or purifying water or producing alcohol.
