Happening right now folks. Seems like it's a big one. Great fast reaction from Chilean government.

SANTIAGO At 17:50 hours Calbuco volcano erupted in the Region of Los Lagos, after spending 43 years inactive, declared a red alert in the area, this implies that the current eruptive process involves a "high threat population. "19: 27. The Seremi Works of Los Lagos reported significant vehicular traffic in the area of Puerto Montt Enseanda to evacuation orders. 19: 21. The mayor of Puerto Montt, Gervoy Paredes, reported that classes are suspended. 19: 20.- all flights to Puerto Montt, to be diverted to Valdivia were suspended.

The Calbuco volcano, whose last eruption was recorded in 1972, is one of the three most dangerous of the 90 active volcanoes having Chile.

Confirmed evac in progress for everybody 20 kilometers around the volcano. North side zero visibility so government can't see how bad it is. Wind blowing to south, ashes start falling. Flights cancelled.

This is bad. Just last Monday the Villarica Volcano (same area), started to get more active.

Villarrica Volcano displays instability. Still active after the eruption last March 3, keeping the orange alert level, according to SERNAGEOMIN while Onemi has yellow alert for communes near the place.

Just read :

"It sounded like a big tractor going down the street. I left everything there, I took my son, my wife and my dog and went out in the car. There were many young people crying," said Trevor Moffat, a Canadian who has lived in Chile the past eight years.

Argentina is preparing, ashes will cover cities close to the Chilean Volcano.

By the speed and wind direction arrival of volcanic ash to Bariloche and the region in the coming hours is calculated.

The mayor of the region of Los Lagos, Nofal Abud, called sectors that are outside the scope of exclusion set within 20 kilometers of Calbuco not evacuate.
"The call is to remain calm, corresponding evacuate the area is under coordination of municipal authorities, but should not do (out of home) but are within that process," said the highest regional authority.
It is worth mentioning that this situation would have been generated in Chamiza and La Colonia as auditors have reported Radio Bío Bío.
Abud added that "the first instruction is not to abandon their homes and respect the curfew was established until 5 in the morning."

The third video in the opening post looks like a mountain of earth rising slowly into the sky. Like others here I am kind of speechless and to those who know me in person that says quite a lot. I hope that everyone concerned there will be ok.

Wowser, that is a lot of ash....but then if it is one of the 3 most potentially dangerous in Chile i would expect that. The fast reaction time would also be expected in a country that suffers from such a propensity of earthquakes and volcanoes (a bit like us in Blighty being fast responding to flooding!).

To Lurksoften, whether a volcanoe spews ash of lava is basically down to how much gas is present in the magma. Lots of gas means ash and when the gas levels drop it means lava.

we need metrics. Depending on the metrics this will have implications for climate for the next several years. as in potentially lower temperatures.

I am not sure here but it looks to me as if most of shaft from the first event has crashed back down sideways somewhat, and the second pillar of fire is just as scary as anything that I have seen here for a while. I think that they were expecting the first part and I really do not know enough about volcanoes to comment on the second part of the eruption.

Well there still saying there could be a third eruption making a new crater.

Calbuco Volcano: SERNAGEOMIN warns possible "more aggressive" eruption

The massif has presented two pulses during the last 24 hours.
A possible third could generate "a new crater".

According to the head of the organization, the situation remains solid "complex" and could have a different evolution to that of the two pulses already submitted; the last of them in the early morning hours .

In that vein, Alvarez warned that there is a possibility that a new crater that gives way to a more aggressive eruption generated.

"There was a pulse starting at 01:00 am which lasted about seven hours. That pulse ended, but we're probably having a different trend, with a different type of eruption," he said.

The scenario considered is a possible third eruption "will no longer be concentrated in high columns, but could be the possibility of developing a new crater and crater that could generate perhaps a little more aggressive eruption".

Anyway, according to projections, the risk remains "within the restricted area (20 km), which does not vary" .

"Therefore, this scenario occurs, according to the background to be driving, it would be more aggressive (the phenomenon), but in the same vicinity of the massif" he summarized.

Those are more ashes than what I was expecting to see. Soon we might need to check the records, if a third event takes place. Thanks for the update.

Wow surprised this isn't getting more attention!!! Hopefully this doesn't trigger more eruptions or cause any serious environmental problems! Hope everyone is safe... and not too much damage to the nearby areas...
