“So what shall we get into today, Jala?” I ask as we walk through a field full of colorful flowers and what I think are butterflies.
“It’s about the perfect time for starting a garden. Asa, Remy, and I have gathered you the seeds you will need to grow your own. If you are
going to be stuck here with us you are going to have to eat.” As Jala walked across the large field she started making a strange whistling sound.
As the sound built I also started hearing another sound, actually I felt it before I heard it. It was a rumble deep within the earth that you could
feel in your bones that slowly built to a thundering.
And then the ground erupted! Dirt and flowers went flying in a thousand different directions; I think I heard the flowers scream in fright. The
butterflies that had been so serine and beautiful just a moment before; turned mean faces toward the opening ground and hissed at the intrusion, OMG
butterflies hiss! And then out came…..um…. a tree?
What looked to be a large giant oak came twisting and flexing out of the ground. Branches stretched like fingers as it ripped itself out of the dirt.
Roots stepped like the legs of an octopus, somehow managing to stay on top of the shifting soil. Once free of the dirt it gave a good shake of its
leaves to remove any remaining dirt then turned towards us and smiled. The tree actually smiled, looking so pleased.
“Jala, was this the garden you needed turned?” asked the tree as it rested a branch on Jala’s shoulder.”
“Oh Banyan, you are such a showoff! Quick acting silly and come meet my new friend. “
And with that I was introduced to a tree. And the branches / hands were soft when he shook my hand, strange since I thought it would feel like a
tree. We took the seeds that Jala’s family had gathered and scattered them in neat rows in the cleared area. Banyan said tomorrow he would help us
to set up an automatic watering system. We set up a small fence to block off the garden area to passersby.
Once the garden was complete we all set back and looked at our work. Beautiful! And now I need a bath, dinner, and bed… in that order.
