Postal Junk Mail Address Label Codes DeMystified Published on November 27, 2010
Q: My wife and I noticed a 1½-inch white dot adhered to our mailbox several weeks ago. I started to remove it but glanced down the street and saw several other mailboxes with similar dots and realized I might break some kind of code. We have seen these dots all over the Fox Valley. Some are white, some green, some orange, and I have seen mailboxes with all three colors. Somebody has been marking us, but for what?
A: I didn't have to go far to find an answer to your question. That somebody who has been marking your mailbox is The Post-Crescent, my employer. Mark Johnson, distribution director for The Post-Crescent, said carriers place the reflective dots to speed the delivery of newspapers in the early morning hours. "It helps the carrier identify the type of subscription to the correct subscriber under dark conditions," Johnson said. "Not all customers have their address on the mailbox adjoining, so this helps." The color-coded dots correspond to the different subscriptions and publications that The Post-Crescent delivers, so that's why you might see more than one dot on a mailbox. At my house, white dots are stuck to the east and west sides of the newspaper box, which is mounted below the mailbox. Johnson said the placement of the dots can vary depending on the location of the newspaper box and the direction of travel. The dots aren't connected to Google Earth, and they don't identify political allegiances or refer to your fate in a new world order, which are just some of the rumors circulating on the Internet.
