Russia's Massive Military Exercise in the Arctic is Utterly Baffling

This article came out 10 days ago but it caught my attention anyway:

Vice News Article

Sounds like the large scale exercise had multiple purposes, one of them being to demonstrate that Russia is well-aware of their northern territories. Another reason is that the Arctic region of Russia contains natural resources, oil and gas, and like all industrialized nations, Russia needs a lot of that (and will continue to need it in years to come).

Today Russia is wrapping up a massive military exercise in the Arctic. The five-day excursion involved some 80,000 troops, 220 aircraft, 41 ships, and 15 submarines. While the scale and scope of the exercise are clearly impressive, what is less clear is the objective.

That said, this is more than just a matter of a game of Kremlin truth-or-dare gone wrong. For starters, there's a whole mess of potential wealth in the Arctic. "This is where future Russian oil and gas resources are located," Malte Humpert, executive director of the Arctic Institute, said of the region. "Most other areas are peaking and running out. So for Russia it will be important to develop more unconventional sources…. Russia will need to invest $100 billion per year in their oil and gas sector just to maintain their current levels."

Given that the Russian Arctic is roughly five times the size of Alaska with a population of just 2.5 million, the recent string of military bases Russia has stood up there may be less about projecting power and more about establishing control within their own borders.

Russia's Arctic Soldiers May Be Rewarded with Free Homes in Crimea: Article

Russian soldiers who serve in the rough and inhospitable Arctic could be compensated by the state with real estate in Crimea, or other desirable locations in southern Russia, a Defense Ministry official said Thursday. Russia is pursuing a major military expansion in the Arctic that aims to reoccupy abandoned Soviet positions and assert Russia's territorial claims in the resource-rich North. “Naturally, military personnel service in remote Arctic garrisons can count on quality accommodation in Russia's central and southern regions,”

Don't worry, at least not until they start talking about the Arctic terrorists.

It isn't just Russia conducting military exercises in the Arctic, though they may be doing the largest scale at the moment. China, USA, and Europe are also busy up there. It's warming up there enough so that oil is within reach.

conspiracy theory; Russia is burning coal in order to make more global warming, which will make it easier to access the northern tier.
China is helping them; they burn coal, the globe warms, Russia gets access, some of that is pipelined down to China.

meanwhile the genius US left does everything it can to prevent fracking and expanded drilling, making us more energy vulnerable.

Seems a tad bizarre how our governments are telling us all about climate change and how we need to reduce our C02 usage, and then are all gearing up to drill oil in the Artic that is becoming reachable because of climate change!

Maybe the russians are looking for that NAzi base that was built in the antarctic?

I don't think it would matter even if there was free energy options for most of the world - if anyone can make money, they're going to do whatever it takes to get their hands on those resources, regardless of the circumstances.

Antarctic is in the Southern Hemisphere, this is in the Arctic Circle in the Northern Hemisphere. Although that would've made for a great conspiracy theory

Not really. Not once you remember that governments exist only to control the population, not to protect it. We are constantly told what to think, not how to think. Governments have an internal agenda quite different from the public version, hence the perceptual contradictions.

That's your answer right there, Russia has long desired to make the Arctic region arable, maybe now they have figured a way to warm it up as would be required, and much easier than digging holes in the ice for precious minerals, etc;

"As much as we worry about climate change today, a warm, melted Arctic was actually a dream of geoengineers since at least the 19th century. But at the height of the Cold War, a Soviet scientist named Petr Mikhailovich Borisov proposed what may be the most ambitious Arctic melting project ever conceived: a dam spanning the 55 mile Bering Strait that would be big enough to redirect the currents of the world's oceans and force warming water to melt the Arctic Ocean forever."

So, d'ya think that desire ever went away?

Oil, natural gas, minerals, veins of precious metals, and Arctic shipping lanes.

I found it interesting that those "large scale exercises" took part during and very close to the path of totality of a very unique solar eclipse. Since there are some theories that the pole may be sorta kinda gateways/stargates to the inner/hollow earth (agartha) and/or other planets/dimensions...

Assuming the Russians think it is at least a very slim possibility that such an eclipse may open a portal - wouldn't they want to

a) study the phenomenon
b) put something between their mainland and whatever might come through such a portal

Putin's Return from Underworld, Russian Fleet in Total Solar Eclipse and a Warning to Lithuania?

Its reminiscent of Admiral Byrd s expeditionary force that went to the Antarctic.
A force of this size sends a very clear message, to someone. Eskimos?

President Obama makes it very clear that this is not the case.

Yeah

Uh... Putin is really reaching

For starters they have a declining population, second in all reality they haven't even begun to fully explore Siberia which is so damn empty one Chinese city has 5x the population of all of Eastern Siberia, third just because you do military exercises doesn't mean you A: even remotely need to develop it yet and B: that anyone will want to live or work there...

You know he is delusional in his mid life crisis of revitalizing Russia to greatness...

New plan for Putin:

1: Get Russian people to have children because 3/4 of your country is an empty wasteland and no Military will hold what is unoccupied when 2 of your neighbors have a Billion + people cramped in.

2: Stop wasting your time pocketing energy money if your such a patriot, Germany has almost as many people and runs on Solar now, this effort is not conducive to anything during the Soviet era Russians were pushed into SCIENCE to solve problems and they were a serious nation, energy bs is just that, science will solve the energy issue not polluting the crap out of the arctic circle

3: Don't pull a Hitler with the occult BS symbolism it doesn't make for good tactics and Russia should know that considering his troops froze to death instead of ushering in a new age of fire, whatever the heck Putin thinks will happen....wont.

4: Put a shirt on you look like an Idiot.
