The US National Guard has already admitted if there is a large scale unrest in the USA the military is spread too thin to be able to be of effective use. This would be in the event of unrest in 3-4 major cities.
Picture protests in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington DC getting out of hand at the same time. The Army and Police would have their hands full pretty quickly.
If the military is called in, imagine soldiers (not really trained well in large crowd control) getting nervous and accidentally firing into the crowd.
The protests would get larger, in more cities. Once they run out of troops, they would probably use drone strikes (police have already been practising with drones in the USA over civilian areas) in order to control the crowds.
News about events would be extremely scattered, very quickly. Cable news networks would be spinning the news in whatever direction they pleased, most would be blaming Republicans for whatever strikes were happening.
The Army would likely get a few divisions that would fracture and refuse to deploy against Americans. The police would be more likely to deploy against US civilians using the large amount of military hardware that they've been supplied for free.
Once you've got a bit of unrest in some large cities, throw in a terrorist attack in one of those centers to add to the panic.
Things would escalate out of control very, very quickly. Martial law would probably be declared, communications severely limited.
Hospitals would be overflowing with days long waits, insurance companies wouldn't be able to process the large number of applicants.
Long distance transport would collapse pretty fast, leading to food shortages, gas shortages, power outages (if not already cut in those cities out of control by the Feds) and more civilian unrest.
On the bright side, Americans are too wrapped up in the next episode of "Keeping up with the Kardashians" to really pay attention or care enough to actually do anything about anything that truly affects their lives. Large scale protests of this sort in the USA require the population to unite over some sort of civil rights issue, and with the divisions in America right now, it's not likely this would happen any time soon.
