This news is breaking, I will post more information as it becomes available.

United Flight 1074 was flying from Dulles, Virginia to Denver, Colorado. The hijacker reportedly screamed and ran towards the cockpit, but was thwarted and subdued by passengers. After the incident, the aircraft returned to Dulles. Upon returning to Dulles, local law enforcement officers met the plane at the gate and detained the passenger. The passenger was then transported to a hospital for evaluation. No passengers were injured and no weapons were found. The twin-engine flight was carrying 33 passengers and a crew of six. The flight departed Dulles at 10:30 PM EDT and returned at 10:40 PM EDT, having been in the air a mere 10 minutes.

The hijacker claimed to have bombs on board, these claims were investigated by officials after the airplane landed in Dulles. After the inspection, the airplane reembarked from Dulles to Denver at 12:45 AM EDT Tuesday.

From the mobile recording provided below, the first name of the suspect appears to be "David".

Not related to this story, but interesting tidbit: Dulles Airport was the point of departure for the doomed American Airlines flight 77, which was seized on September 11, 2001, and crashed into the Pentagon.

More information can be found in this Washington Post article: Jet Returns to Dulle

Source of initial information provided to the news media (son of a passenger on board): Reddit Thread

He clearly states that the suspect claimed there were bombs on board, and screamed "Jihad! Jihad!" while sprinting towards the cockpit. However, perhaps due to his mental state and low level of legitimate threat, in combination with dismissive statements released by the airline and airport (due to obvious reasons), it is being downplayed by the media.

Hopefully ... that was his Last opportunity to fly.

People have gone overboard with their need to seek attention and 'act' all crazy.

Your Title is misleading !

A United Airlines flight was forced to return to Washington, D.C., after a passenger failed to comply with crew instructions, a spokesperson for the airline said today.

Flight 1074 en route to Denver returned to Dulles International Airport shortly after takeoff late Monday. The pilots told air traffic controllers that the passenger became violent but was restrained by passengers, according to LiveATC.net.

"He ran forward towards the cockpit and he is being restrained by passengers," said one of the pilots. "Cockpit is secure and we would like to return to the airport and have the authorities meet him."

Please explain to me how this was an attempted Hijack ?

nothing in your link talk's about "bombs being on board. "

A United Arlines jetliner returned to Dulles International Airport on Monday night after takeoff when a passenger failed to comply with crew instructions, the airline said.

Local law enforcement officers met the plane at the gate at Dulles and detained the passenger, the airline said.

No passengers were injured and no weapons were found, said a spokeswoman for Dulles.

The airplane, Flight 1074, was carrying 33 passengers to Denver from Dulles. It was a twin-jet Boeing 737 with a crew of six.

The aircraft returned to Dulles about 10:40 p.m. “because of a disturbance” on board, said Kimberly Gibbs, the spokeswoman for the airport.

She said the passenger who was removed was “transported to a local hospital for evaluation.”

The flight was scheduled to depart at 10:30 p.m., suggesting that it was not in the air long before it turned back.

The Reddit link says "Failed Hijack" so I assumed this where it comes from. The poster on Reddit was the one to provide the story to the news people and the airlines provided the rest. So not misleading since he used the Reddit post but it seems it is just a sick young guy and hopefully he will get some help.

I was wondering the same thing !

It seems the OP is feeling like putting a bit of a "spin" on things today !

Op might find a spot in the MSM with that skill set ...

Just saying ...

dont be all down on him man, this is how social media rolls out info, maybe the social media site he got his info from was spare of minute, as it is happening, wham bam!!!! and he got all pumped up about it.
Not like it hasnt happened before, well maybe not on here because we like to deny ignorance and research all plausible possibilities before jumping to conclusions.

I posted it in the OP but I'll post it again:

He clearly states that the suspect claimed that there were bombs on board, and screamed "Jihad! Jihad!" while sprinting towards the cockpit. However, perhaps due to his mental state and low level of legitimate threat, in combination with dismissive statements released by the airline and airport (due to obvious financial reasons), it is being downplayed by the media. I'd rather trust a citizen like you or me than corporations looking out for quarterly profits.

Furthermore, let's also not pretend that race does not play a role in this. A clearly disturbed white young man and it's a "disturbance". Suppose it was an equally disturbed young Arab, what do you think would be plastered across the headlines?

Media headlines in Australia say hijack .

www.9news.com.au...

Then they back away from that . I most likely have posted the same way .

I find it reassuring that passengers no longer sit and do nothing when crap like this occurs.

Passengers have not got a history of sitting and doing nothing when crap like this occurs. United Airlines Flight 93, contained passengers who were prepared to fight, and it is thought that their actions were all that prevented the hijackers from completing their plan, and ploughing the aircraft into the White House, or some other D.C. building of note.

Prior to 9/11 crews were trained to keep the passengers calm and seated. They were taught to get the aircraft on the ground and let negotiators deal with it. And that worked for that time.

Life is too short to do what you do.

This story, and title came from Reddit. It was posted there by the man who filmed it.

I don't understand why they were so gentle though.

Totally agree. Although i do wonder if there would have been the same reaction if he was carrying a machete or had a gun......you hope so but i don't know......

He appears to be a young man with issues though. Hopefully he is getting the helps he clearly needs now.
