That's exactly what I was hoping to achieve. If that is/was achieved, then the natural outcome is increased interest and traffic.

If I may as a question SO?

Are you happy with how it went, I assume you had your reasons.

ATS has changed many times as far as I am aware and I can only imagine the changes have been met with resistance.

The future of ATS is yours and yours alone, members may come and go but ultimatley that is what they are.

I hope you enjoy the evoloution of ATS. stagnation leads to decay.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Not sure what people are tweaking about...this kind of fluid, breaking or member driven investigation of news takes place on reddit, all of the time - with information vetting and constantly updated OPs. It's happened on ATS as well, to a lesser degree, without the updated OPs but still all the real-time content and vetting.

I tend to think the criticism of the thread is not much more than bad manners, trolling and carpet soiling.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

There's no way the thread info was a hoax.
Sure it contained many theories and speculations, but every thread does that, and I like that.
That Putin was MIA was no hoax at all.

Some website's have commented on how he looked a bit pale at his meeting with the Kyrgystan leader today...

Vlad the I'm Paler...

Rationale explained here

Overall, discounting some of the naysayers, I think it went very well.

A few people were playing with the nuance of rumor and the evolution of the thread toward using primarily tweets as the source of informaiton. As well as not being able to see the difference between one-tweet isn't news, but thousands are.

But then, in reality, nothing is different than many of the threads throughout the history of ATS that began with rumors and speculation, and evolved into viable conspiracy theories. The only difference was the source… a source which many can't seem to accept.

I mean seriously -- when it comes to rumors of what's happening in the world outside the boundaries of the mainstream news monopoly, what's the difference between a guy with a blog and a guy tweeting? Nothing except for the character count.

Well this has been a fun few days. So much panic over Putin not tweeting, updating his Facebook page (does he have a Facebook page?) and taking a few days off.

But, but, but, they have nukes and have to have a visible leader.

I think Obama & Biden should pull a Putin to see if they can sucker Boehner into doing a Haig impression declaring "I am in control here". Their disappearance would be just as entertaining.

Eta- I think theres an obvious reason as to why no respected journalist was picking this up and running with it. You would think that if there was merit to the speculation then anybody with a press badge would be all over it trying to be the first to break the news.

LOL are you kidding me? The U.S. doesn't have any journalists that deserve respect. The ones that did have either quit, or been fired. Have you seen the news ratings? I think the only people watching any news available on cable are people that enjoy being on the Right Wing vs. Left Wing teams and fighting each other, over mostly biased facts, or outright lies.

Just bad form by ats I believe. It should have never been placed under news. Grey area sure. But, by placing it in the forum you did, and violating your own T&Cs, I believe you knocked ATS's credibility down a peg. But its your site to do what you wish.

Maybe it lost credibility to the boxheads, but for people that are truly interested in the bigger picture and not just the western powers hollywood slant, this is a great place to be!

Humanity is getting past the point of wanting to be talked AT or lectured to or spoon fed information. We want a dialogue, conversation, exchange of ideas and to be able to speak directly with people from different cultures and countries to get their 1st hand varying opinions.

It is truly a global community now, but many of us believe it shouldn't be a ONE global world, and that's why there was so much action on that thread imo.... it's like intelligent, creative, critical thinkers that have been starved for air for decades had a place to express themselves.

Now if you're going to complain about the 'category' it was placed in.... really? You're the guy that would be re-arranging the seats on Titanic right? And bitching left and right at all the people to get back in their seats, not caring to listen that were saying, 'Hey man... something doesn't seem right, let's go get near one of them lifeboats'

Put another way, you've got the people running out of WTC getting to the bottom and being told to go back in. That's it safer in the building that just got hit with a plane. The majority do.

Some of us can think for ourselves and said... 'Nah, I think I'll take my chances and got the hell out'

Although it takes all kinds, and you can laugh and call me names all you want for 'speculating', but quit being such control freaks ffs. I'm sure you're also the ones burning books.

'OH NO, Burnaise (sp) Look an original thought got free and it's out into the public',
'SHUT IT DOWN now before other people start thinking!' cried Zbignew and Henry almost in unisom

I must admit I didn't comment on that thread, simply because of the word Rumour, but what it did make me do was Google the hell out of your headline and found the story in the Daily Mail first of all. Again, pure conjecture, very lazy and disappointing journalism.

From there I went to RT and there was nothing. Subsequently I looked at Sky News and then the BBC and on both occasions, nothing. Which means the P.A or Reuters weren't running with the rumours, which in all probability meant it could not be verified. Yet the Daily Mail decided to run with the story on their website, be interested to see if they put it in print.

excellent point.

If ATS is to evolve then 'real time' info is a great target. A whole new classification of threads possibly, to ease the transition.

Hello Skeptic.

Soz I really dont get it. Thread titled:Rumor: Putin Has Been Neutralized by a "Stealthy Coup When reporting in breaking news we try and base it on facts from a reliable news outlets, As we know now Putin was not neutrilized by a steathy coup. Its not breaking news. There are peeps on ATS that have had threads binned for less. No discussion.

That being said I think it was even if wrong a good bit of detective work on your part. You put together different bit of information to draw a conclusion based on information gained mostly from social media. Why not make a forum where peeps can publish information like a jounrnalist forum or something..

Ty for your thread

happy days.

Then you missed a post that gave good evidence Putin was alive and running the government. You would have known something others missed!

Here it was...
---------------------------
The Armenian President claims to have spoken to Putin over the phone on March 12.

www.eurasianet.org...

Clearly unless a voice mimic fooled him then Putin is still actively running the country.

The 'Coup' might be limited to a big shuffle of power players under Putin...
--------------------------

not 'definitive' by a good source.

Hey, rumours were abound this last weekend, it was an interesting time though and lots of Flags and stars were awarded.

edit- I would also like to add, whilst it wasn't in the MSM, the alternative press did recognise and acknowledge Putin's disappearance and I was glued to ATS throughout.

So what you are saying is that although nothing happened many people had fun, talked about things and learned a little bit about the world?

For shame...

Indeed my friend, indeed.

Does the daily mail online use computer code/program that searches social sites and writes a story?

I know they are used in the media by other news agencies and if the story has merit it will be picked up and looked by so called real journalists

They had a section about this on radio two a few weeks ago,and saying it would cut costs in the media industry as they could lower staff levels for a better profit margin

I think the thread was warranted, but i also think there needed to be more caution in the way people dealt with the rumours and overall scheme of things. I saw wild speculation and exaggerations, not dissimilar to what we have seen in the past. But at least in the past, there was more to go on and more research to do. I don't think the thread regarding Putin is 100% comparable to the thread of MH370's disappearance, for example.

I also disagreed with the way some members were treated inside the thread. It wasn't right. Between that, the crazy speculation and ATS' willingness to capitalise on it through social media posts, i don't think the thread was a particularly good reflection of the community. At least not as good as previous large events and topics which ATS has been involved in.

Well, I guess there's always gonna be a few people who, just because he is a site owner, will act like they are gonna win some prize if they can catch him making an error of some sort... There is no prize, except for self righteous indignation. I know, because I used to be one of those people who would pull out my microscope whenever I saw a post by SO, Phage or any other hotshot ATS member. Now I grew up a little and try to only point out what I see as errors to be helpful, or funny, or if I think someone is being a jerk... doing it just to be "righter" is just counterproductive.

But don't let me stop anyone from enjoying the party they've thrown for themselves.

This is what's nice about being new. I saw the 'ats owner' under Skeptic (always wanna say Evil...just kinda goes together with) Overlord... but I thought it was the same as you having 'Im priceless' under your name. And thought he was just kinda being close-minded in another topic until you all started calling him out.

Guess my to-do list of changing 'Theoretical Optimistic Pragmatist' to 'ats owner' to be a smart-ass is a no-go now dammit.

I see Phage's name a lot and think he is indeed funny, but had/have no clue why people were acting so distressed over him saying 'aloha'. So hopefully he knows that the people on this site obviously hold him in high esteem also. I mean it sounds like all this hoax classification stuff is way deeper and has a long history with all you regulars.

But as a person not knowing all that personal history 'stuff' and don't have a dawg in the fight so to speak. I really appreciated having that thread, and reading everyone's musings on the situation. Maybe it's just my ego, but it felt nice to feel like we were all a part of exchanging ideas, viewpoints, information, sharing it and dissecting it like we were what imo real old time journalists would have been doing. Fleshing out ALL information.

And it was nicer being able to do it with a group of people, instead of trying to find/read everything I could on my own. So thanks to all of you, and I'm sure this little spat will be worked out.

Do what guys usually do, punch each other in the face, then laugh and go have a beer

There's something to be said for the freedom of speech epitomized by The Godlike Production.

Is that sarcasm or the truth? Hard to figure out, when I don't have a reference for that site. Always nice to know where free speech is 'allowed' nowadays, thanks.
