When I worked at a campground, the campers threw them out all the time. Usually the solar cells and circuits worked fine, it was normally the light blub or battery that went bad. Not sure what they cost new, but look for them on sale. It shouldn't be hard to wire up an array of cells for higher current if you wanted to make a DIYS charger for larger batteries.
