Anyone using Nagios for their IT management and security?

I am currently testing Nagios for IT security and management for our enterprise. I was wondering if anyone else was also involved in evaluation of this service? Some companies can’t afford solar winds or similar so we are giving this a try. www.nagios.org... Is anyone familiar and do you have an opinion? Thanks for your input.

I haven't used it myself, but for what it's worth I know several of our clients (large financial companies) use it extensively combined with either AppDynamics, or New Relic if they just want something cheap and cheerful.

I'm the nagiosadmin at our shop.

It's neat, it's free, and it can monitor damn near anything- but like most free tools, it's only good enough. It's a hackjob of a project.

The people I work for could easily afford solarwinds or similar, but that would cut into profits. Can't have that, can we...
