A Madison Police Department officer shot a 19-year-old black man Friday night, prompting more than 100 protesters to gather at the Willy Street area and stage a sit-in at the City-County Building. Protesters said the name of the man killed was Tony Robinson, although MPD did not confirm the man’s identity. Robinson was a graduate of Sun Prairie High School and was planning on attending Madison College, according to a Facebook post from Dane County Boys and Girls Club CEO Michael Johnson. “The family has asked for peaceful protest,” Johnson posted on his Facebook page. “The mother has asked that her son not be dehumanized by local authorities.”

It seems the US can not catch a break when it comes to racial divisive situations. Here we have yet another headline grabbing excessive use of force story on the national stage in the 24 hour news cycle.

This isn't news anymore, this is normal. Protests are a waste of time which is proven time and time again, hence the lack of support compared to previous ones. As for peace, I think that ship sailed though, according to the report, the entire conflict was violent including the victim. Sure these feral cops are too trigger happy and really need to be put down, and maybe his death was a bit excessive but he should not be a thug. People should know the score by now.

if you know it or not you are confirming to the way they want you to see things...

or you in fact could be the official poster boy for them illustrating the score rather well...

giving fair warning that this is the new way of things...

Are people really that ok with this???

Why does this always have to turn into a race issue when its not.
The young man who appears to have been killed by mistake, or not as the details are not ccompletely clear, was a person, a human being, not just another "black" shot by the PD.

Why do people always have to turn what is already tragic into a three ring "they shot him because hes black" circus.

It seems like police are given a green light to use lethal force if they're simply assaulted. It doesn't matter if the person attacking them is unarmed. This must be clearly expressed in their police training. "If you feel like your life is in danger, you have a right to protect yourself and use lethal force." This lets the police officer interpret when his life is in danger, and justifies him using lethal force. It's really a tough call when nobody can feel what the officer is thinking at the time of the struggle or assault. I really don't think police officers want to intentionally kill someone because of the color of their skin.

I think part of the problem is police are dealing with a generation of young people who have a flagrant disrespect for authority. They simply don't respect their parents, teachers, and the elderly. So in their eyes, a police officer is no different. They let their emotions control their physical actions which escalates the situation with police. Police are encountering this more often than what they've experienced from earlier generations. Common sense doesn't rule in the minds of many young people today.

I don't see this problem going away anytime soon. Until a weapon is developed that is capable of totally immobilizing someone, I think out of control emotions, and police procedures will continue to play a major role in these incidents.

The last sentence in the article you posted seems very telling, the mother asked that local officials not dehumanize her son. What I heard with that statement was please don't bring my son's criminal record into this incident, because he was a good boy that was about to leave for college, just like Michael Brown.

Weve seen how college kids act here in Michigan when they totally trashed two ski lodges recently. I agree that the youth today have no respect for anything or anybody. It is telling that young people in college have this mind set. You'd think a higher education would mean something to them, but apparently it has little effect on the general attitude lately.

The first responding officer was called to the apartment the subject had entered, Koval said. The officer forced entry into the apartment after he heard a disturbance.

Koval said the subject assaulted the officer and during the struggle, the officer drew his gun and shot the subject, the Wisconsin State Journal reported. Koval said he did not know if the subject was armed but that initial findings at the scene did not reflect a gun.

Koval said he did not know how many times the officer shot and that he administered CPR. Robinson was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Victim's aunt speaks to crowd: "He stood 6'5 and wouldn't hurt a fly.

All of the above quotes are from the article in the OP. Before anyone starts trying to lynch the cop, in this thread or elsewhere, they can take into account the entire circumstance of the situation.

It was mostly white kids who trashed the ski lodges, but they didn't say that in the reports. That seems to support your contention.

that would have been better than to fight with a man that has a gun. at least he'd still be alive.
chances are if, if you start a fist fight with a person carrying a gun, your more than likely gonna loose, and more than likely your gonna die.

“The mother has asked that her son not be dehumanized by local authorities.”

You mean don't post up his criminal history or talk about what led to him being shot by the cops in the first place?

No, lets do the Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown and post of pictures of unassumingly sweet young black men and scream racism and express outrage that anyone would want to murder these sweet young men in cold blood!

When will society realize that young black men like these should not have to worry about getting shot by the cops while committing crimes.

Hence why they want gun "control". And half the people buy it.

While this particular situation might not call for it, I think that protests CAN work, but they're not being done properly.

The police don't really care if you protest them. You have no control over them, with no leverage the only thing you could do would be to start whacking random cops, which would get their attention but maybe not in a positive way.

What you NEED to do in a protest of this nature is to go after a pol. Camp out at the mayor's. At the DA's. At the elected judges'. At the governor's. Any elected career official who is in the chain of command for the police group you want to influence.

Then chant "No justice, you're out of office" or something that rhymes better. They don't care about peace. What gets THEIR attention is the possibility of actually falling from that pedestal and having to go back to work like a prole. Maybe "All we are saying, is you're losing the election" or "All we are saying, give recall a chance" maybe "Results or recalls". Start circulating a well constructed recall drive if that's possible in the locale. THAT will get you immediate results. Very few city officials or prosecutors can withstand the thoughts of getting tossed out on their ears. The reason they pander to the LEOs is that the LEOs can make them seem ineffectual, and the unions bribe the crap out of them. If they're not worried about the electorate and they ARE worried about cop unions, then they'll cave to the cops.

If they smell a deadly recall creeping up on them, they''ll be out there with pitchforks and torches burning cops along with you.

But protesting at the cop station just gives them a feeling of accomplishment.

A 19-year-old unarmed man is dead following a Friday altercation with a police officer in Madison, Wisc. A Facebook group identified the victim as Anthony Robinson, who was reportedly shot five times in the chest. This after Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said authorities responded to reports that a man was "walking in traffic and hitting pedestrians." The victim was followed to an apartment by an officer who forced entry. "Once inside the home, the subject involved in this incident, the same one that had been allegedly out in traffic and had battered someone, the same subject then assaulted my officer and in the context of mutual combat in that sense the officer did draw his revolver and subsequently shot the subject," Koval said.

Nope...just another street thug, leeching the system, caught after beating some people up.
