I did not know that the French have an iteration of the popular coexist sticker or campaign.

But it seems that this street artist called Combo created one using just the Muslim, Jewish and Christian symbols. And for doing so, he received a dislocated shoulder, bruises and a black eye.

It seems like something one would be hard pressed to disagree with: the word “coexist,” written on a wall using a Muslim crescent as the letter “C,” a Star of David as the letter “X,” and a Christian cross as a “T.”

But in Paris, this particular iteration of the popular inscription—here, created by the street artist Combo, who also pasted a life-size photo of himself next to it—didn’t go down well with everybody. Le Monde reports that four young people asked the artist to remove it last weekend, and beat him up severely when he refused to do so.

Why? It's not like he was showing any disrespect to anyone's religion. Unless it is simply disrespectful to imply that the three Abrahamic religions ought to learn to settle our differences and get along.

Anyhow, you can see the piece of street art he created at the link and decide for yourself if he was pulling a Charlie Hebdo and deserved being attacked.

I find it quite difficult to recognise what is happening to our liberal society. We are being set upon by a religious intolerance that has not been in Europe for a very long time. Very worrying.

Looks pretty neat... that design.

Unfortunately some turds didn't think so.

it's either co-exist with other Religions or desist the Religions to get along without IMO, otherwise this will just continue.

I hope you are not implying that the Charlie Hebdo attack was justified?

No, more trying to draw a false equivalence between how he was portraying their religion and how Hebdo portrayed it. But I could have drawn a comparison really between how Hebdo portrayed ALL religions and how he portrayed them. There is no real comparison. All he did was use the symbols. Nowhere have a I heard it said that it is somehow blasphemous to draw the crescent ... or the Star of David ... or the cross ... where I have heard it said you can never draw Mohammad.

So the only real conclusion I can draw, the one I was trying to imply, is that he was beaten only for showing the symbols of the three religions side by side in a way that implies their equivalence and potential for brotherhood.

I guess I read that last sentence of yours wrong then. My bad.

French case-law definitely doesn't forbid to draw the Muslim prophet, or the Muslim crescent.
France is a secular state, guaranteeing religious freedom, so (sort of needless to say) those young thugs were in the wrong.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

I need more info. I'm not a particular fan of graffiti 'street art' in general. Was it his wall? I might be inclined to go all Louisville Slugger on someone who painted his 'art' all over a wall on my property, no matter what the message was.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

Liberals are what is happening to our liberal society - liberal and progressive intolerance

Since liberals, socialists and progressives have started the crusade against "politically incorrect" speech and started forcing people out of jobs, etc for saying certain words or expressing certain thoughts
intolerance has been growing and growing

The more you say
"you can't say ........." or else
the more other people join in on the intolerance

Our current liberal/progressive insistence on not saying anything to offend anyone at any time or doing anything to offend anyone at anytime has led to the deepest and ugliest sort of intolerance since the dark ages.

For heavens sake we are now trying to put bakers in jail for not wanting to bake certain types of cake, all in the name of tolerance
How intolerant is that, especially when there are other options
like going to another baker
or even protesting
rather than taking them to court

The new liberalism/progressiveism espoused by the Democratic party in particular
is starting to look like a new form of inquisition
Believe as we do .... or else.... suffer the consequences...which become more dire by the day

That sort of rhetoric around the media and around the world
has led to everyone hunkering down and being more intolerant than ever.
All because the liberals and progressives insist that being offended be turned into a crime,
and be viewed as not acceptable and punishable.

The new liberal society has taught it's members to be easily offended
and to take action when offended,
and people who are offended are doing just that
in more and more ludicrous ways
which are NOT derided by the MSM or the liberal politicians
certain groups when offended are given a pass by liberal politicians to act out in the most egregious ways

Interesting - your source is Gateway Pundit - which also links to Jihad Watch, and says this:

Four Muslims in Porte Dorée (the Golden door), a ghetto east of Paris, beat artist Combo after he refused to take down his Coexist street art. Combo suffered a dislocated shoulder, bruises and a black eye.

But, in an article about this incident in The Guardian - no mention of who it was exactly, only this:

“Tired that I wasn’t giving up, they left me bleeding and ran off. They promised me the same treatment if I started again and advised me to shave off my beard.” He said that despite threats he would continue to post his work around Paris streets.

The artnet story says this:

Combo declined to discuss the identity of his assailants. “It would only add fuel to the fire," he told the French newspaper.

Which source is the more reliable do you think? It may well be that 4 Muslims beat him up - and asked him to shave his beard. Will be interesting to see if there are more details coming

Well you know how some outlets are - they can't be un-PC. Our own president can't call it what it is either.

So, they don't like it when you use the crescent "c", draw cartoons which satirize Muhammad, etc. ................. and these are just the so-called moderates.

Oh, I wouldn't go that far.

They could be radicalized youth. In fact, I'm guessing they are. Just because the official media doesn't report it as such doesn't mean it isn't known that Europe has it's own internal homegrown radical problem. Much more of one than the US could ever hope to claim.

These are basically just like the roving packs of youths who seem to be prevalent in our bigger cities these days. The media doesn't say it, but we all know what the main problem there is.

People should copy and paste that art all over the streets of the World. Bumper stickers, flags, leaflets...hell, drop them from the buildings in the millions.

They may get some but they can't stop them all.

Peace

I'm getting real tired of seeing all this Muslim violence. Yes, I know that people of all races and religions commit violent acts. All I'm saying is I'm fed up with these so called "moderate" muslims and their apologist liberal defenders.

Is there any actual evidence to show that this attack was done by Muslims...moderate or radical ?...other than sensational news outlets who can redact their crap when proven otherwise ?

Why would he refuse to identify his assailants, claiming it would only add fuel to the fire? What fire to you suppose he was referring to? I suspect it to be the raging fire of anti-Islamic sentiment which is growing daily. If these sensationalist news outlets are trying to fuel these flames, they're definitely succeeding. I for one happen to share those sentiments. Feel free to call me a racist, islamophobe, or whatever else you'd like. Your opinion of me is quite irrelevant I assure you.

Well - one thing is for sure. We could never accuse Gateway Pundit or Jihad watch of ever being PC

Or accurate

Do we know for sure that they were Muslims - or would you rather just assume?

I'm curious about why Muslims would ask a fellow Muslim to shave his beard...
