Awesome thread zazzafrazz, and relevant to other ongoing discussions in lots of ways. I have been enjoying the recording very much.

I have been learning a lot about upper-atmospheric lightning lately, and I can't help but think that what happened in Michigan had to do with that. There's heavy stuff going down up there with electricity.

Thanks again for the thread, I'm on a fourth listen-through of the recording; it's pure gold.



ETA: I'm a quick study. After looking in to what Phage is talking about, it totally sounds like that. I'm just biased because of what I've been reading.

What in particular about this incident indicates that ET is involved?

I grew up in that part of Michigan, right on Lake Michigan. Lots of lights over the lake, with most of them related to regular air traffic coming and going from Chicago.

But every other year or so, they'd announce on the local radio station that Glenview Naval Air Station in Illinois was launching jets to investigate unusual objects over Lake Michigan. We'd go outside and see lights doing fascinating things high up over Lake Michigan. The one I remember most vividly is a huge white light that start changing colors and then split into 3 smaller green lights that tightly circled like a merry-go-round, and then faded out together. In every instance, it was reported the next day that the object zipped up and away at extreme speed as the jets approached.

While writing this, I suddenly remembered that Glenview Naval Air Station closed in 1995. The UFO reports from the south half of Lake Michigan went way down after that. Could it be that the Naval Air Station was responsible for much of the UFO activity? Or, did media reports decrease because there was no "drama" involved with reports from the public, because jets weren't scrambled after 1995? Hmmm...

Sure it could be. It could have been natural phenomena, or something else…..

If you were looking at the air station, you'd have to look at what they had tech wise in 94 that would have that pattern of behaviour in flight.

I can't get enough of that kind of stuff, and this particular recording is just so full of everything that makes UFO stories great: the annoyed dispatcher, the guy kindly asking if they "...have access to a radar?", the sound of pride in people's voices when they get their story out "just as they saw it". The radar-guy, he's great. The Michigan accents.

What have you been learning about upper-atmospheric lightning that you can share pertaining to this?

You know, I'm sorry about that, I'm using Project Condign's Working Papers as a guide and I got my upper-atmospheric lightnings mixed up with my tropospheric airglows.

The way I understand it is that conditions in the troposphere can exist where thunder storm conditions can create a vertical charge distribution and high winds below can create a horizontal distribution of charges. That seems simple enough for me to understand in a rudimentary way, but the part that I don't fully understand is that, apparently, some displacement can occur that causes plasma in the ionopshere to become unstable and shoot down as a stream of electrons which lights up the lower atmosphere as "nocturnal lights" or what is also called airglow.

Sorry for the mix up, I can't really say what role that upper-atmospheric lightning might play in the creation of the tropospheric airglow; nothing, I think.

I'm kinda sorry I stepped in, I'd rather hear what Phage and/or karl have to say about the rare phenomenon.

From what I read in this forum, it seems that the military has had "secret" capabilities dating back to the 1940's. In fact, didn't they (the military) just come out with a disclosure last week stating that most of the older (and probably current?) UFO reports were due to their secret flight-related tests?

Yes its strange indeed, kind of! not really! Or whatever!

But you know Occams Razor, "the simplest and likeliest explanation is likely the right one" So since this is a mass sighting, then all that means, that what we have here is a mass coagulation of swamp gas in the atmosphere, or maybe some sort of mass troupe of remote controlled Chinese lanterns, or mass lighted weather balloons being caught in a draft.

But there is also the other definition of Occams Razor, the original one which says "Plurality is not to be posited without necessity" So hence one can deduce they dont exist as necessity need not be compounded upon.

Obviously what this is?...Is but another one of those strange things which happen once in a while. If that is the case? Its actually quite a normal phenomenon then, as in actuality many strange things happen once in a while. Why sometimes it almost seems to happen every few months, or at least once every few years.

So I suppose there is nothing to see here. I suppose we can all mozy on along now.

Not saying it was definitely spoofing. That was the impression I got reading the OP though. Military stuff in the air with some radar spoofing to 'UFO the story up'.

It could be that anomalous propagation of course but I'm not familiar enough with that to really say.
