JUPITER!

Nah, it's Venus. Jupiter is currently rising with the Moon in the east.

It's Venus for sure, listen carefully at 14:00, you can hear the goddess of love having her predictable effect on the Tom Hallses.

So you think THIS picture looks like Venus? haha...Wow, some people's kids! Yeah, Venus lights up the sky like this and moves slowly (Earth rotation slowly???) enough to where you can visibly see it is moving, but slowly...The last time I checked and watched the sky, I can't sit and watch a star travel that far based on the freaking Earth's rotation...But that is just me I guess...

Looks like the planet Venus. No much else to say about it really

Sorry but your wrong, No disrespect, but yes you can sit and watch Venus move very very slowly. Ever watched Venus or the moon through a telescope, you have to constantly keep moving the telescope to keep the planet in frame. Every night for the past few months I can go outside at the same time just before sunset, look to the West and Wolla its right there. exact same light. Try it later tonight if you dont think im correct. anywhere close to sunset. It is very very bright right now

What really strikes me is that it is close to a perfect square, which seems to perhaps be a tear in space with a lot of energy leaving. To be extremely speculative, is this an artificially created portal? (think like the idea used in "Fringe")

No what causes that is the lens on the camera and the number of aperture blades used to form the opening and autofocus is another issue as can be seen on the video as the camera hunts for focus. It's most likely Venus as it sets not long after the Sun and the direction etc is correct.

You did not take into account the camera has ZOOMED in so movement will be seen over even a few seconds many members here take astrophotography images we even have a thread about it.
Members Pictures

So before you JUMP to conclusions and try to make a fool of another member slow down and YOU wont make a fool of yourself like you did here.

Oh goody. Yet another rubbish "ufo" video. I think this makes it number 245,387 ?

And you guys wonder why we mock you. I believe life exists elsewhere in the universe. No yet a single picture or video I have ever seen convinces me that said life is visiting us. And as an avid 39 year old astronomer who has and still does spend hours outside at night (finely saw Lovejoy the other night) ...i have never seen anything that changes my opinion.

I might be as desperate as you guys for first contact but I refuse to take the ridiculous leaps you do.

And that is the most important thing in my opinion.

There's nothing crazy about believing that aliens exist in our galaxy. And to them we are aliens.

The whole crazy thing comes from a light-year sized leap of faith based on a need to believe that that strange light in the sky represents alien visitation.

Has anyone discounted a personal drone? A quad with lights perhaps?

That's exactly what it looked like to my eye. Could also be a planet (Venus) due to duration of sighting.

UFO until identified, could be human made, alien made or natural phenomena.

No One is jumping straight to aliens but you...

Ontopic, Kind of interesting...

Two out of three of those possibilities are far more likely. Logic dictates we go with one of those two.

Go watch the tv series Fringe so you can understand the basics of what im talking about regarding wormholes in speculative theory, then get back to me. I did also say extremely speculative, so you might want to use a dictionary as well ,because both your comprehension and etiquette seem to be seriously lacking.

Because we get our physics lessons from fictional TV shows and movies?

For future reference, Venus is a planet not a star. Planets are light-minutes away, whereas stars (not counting our Sun, which is also a star) are light-years away. Big difference. In addition, Venus does also have it's own movement independent of the Earth....which, since it is much closer, is more detectable than a star.

As your such an uber astronomer I suppose you have seen planet x as well then? Because that is as real as the nose on your face, the same as the UFO phenomenon and I am privilaged enough to witness both..go back to sleep!

Really? "Planet X" is real? Do tell. I am sure the astronomical community would love your insight because you know we've searched for such a planet or brown dwarf since the mid 1980s and come up short.

Lot of dwarf planets beyond Neptune but nothing big with a hugely eccentric orbit like the "Planet X/Niburu" crowd alleges.

So please, tell me and other astronomers where we can view this planet X.

Planets have very strict rules they adhere to so it should not be a problem to locate it. Their orbits are as predictable as the sun rising and setting.

After watching this time-lapse recording of Mars and Venus setting, I believe that what Tom Hall really has is a wonderful video of Venus setting.

If I understand correctly from browsing, Venus is conjunct Neptune, so that makes sense as far as seeing Venus alone in the sky.

The part I don't get is how it could appear that it sets so quickly. Is it because his camera was not really stationary?

Anyhow, it's been very interesting for me as I did not really understand the extent to which Venus contributes to UFO sightings.

I still think that the interplay between the couple is priceless.

I'll be standing by to learn more.

That's why many astronomers are skeptical of UFO reports because Venus all too often is reported even by trained observers like pilots, police, etc.

It's also why UFOs as alien believers should not mock the identification of such UFOs as Venus. I forget the exact figure but I think I read something like 45 percent of UFO reports were down to natural astronomical things. Planets, meteors, etc.

A large part of that is Venus.

She is a beautiful and tricky lady.

My favorite is the story Neil Tyson tells about Venus darting back and forth across the sky. Of course believers will say that the debunkers are crazy because Venus can't do that. Maybe not, but that' s what the observers saw, and yes, it was Venus. Turns out they were driving down a winding road and it didn't occur to them that's what made Venus appear to be veering back and forth.

My other favorite story is by J Allen Hynek. He was riding in a police car, and they were chasing a UFO. Hynek asked them to stop the car and point out the UFO they were chasing. As an astronomer he immediately recognized the "UFO" as the star Arcturus, which appeared to be moving at the speed of the car over the treetops. It would have taken them a while to catch that one...Arcturus is a lot farther away than Venus.

There are no planes that are that bright and there are no planes that can be observed for that long and seem to be barely moving.

Sorry I disagree. Have you seen the headlights on Airbus planes? I've experienced this first hand in my car, some of the brightest lights I've ever encountered! Modern planes have incredibly powerful headlights.

Spot the plane

This video to me, looks like a plane landing at either Dublin international or Prestwick. I say that because it looks exactly like planes I see landing into Heathrow every morning from 5am through to 11pm at night. Exactly the same. Big bright singular looking light that appears motionless for 5 maybe 10 minutes, then slowly descends. It's covering many miles on such a particular angle that it seems to "float".

I do find the 15 minute length quite long even for that typical landing plane scenario. But Dublin get a fair few flights in from the South from places like Birmingham where they probably have no need to ever go about 20,000ft, no sooner are planes ascending from Bham, Prestwick or Manchester that they probably need to descend!

If you look at the map op showed, if you moved that map upwards a fraction, Glasgow airport would be sitting there at the bottom. Move it a little bit more and you've got Prestwick. Both well within sights of landing aircraft from the witness. If you look at the supposed witness location, they are on raised ground!! Partly up a mountain themselves, and they have stated they were looking South.

So they are looking in the direction of 2 airports, both of which will be receiving aircraft at 5.45pm, especially so at that time. It's not a drone, its a plane covering a lot of ground at a particular angle for an extended period of time, with its headlights on full, as many/all planes do when it's getting dark.. !? The witness is situated at quite a perfect angle to catch it for the whole 10 minutes.

If I was one floor above the one I'm on (I'm 1st floor) I would also see a full 10-20 minute approach into Heathrow. I'm a bit lower, so I only catch them at higher altitude, as such I see them "floating" for about 5 minutes - witness here though is seeing a good spread of altitude because they've got good visibility on high alt AND low alt as they're in a range of/on a hill.

All the planes from the East that I can see come in on a corridor, and then split either to Heathrow, or to Luton/Standstead. So I see floating lights every evening, motionless, but they soon then move left or right, slowly or fast depending on where they're going exactly. The witness here isn't experiencing anything more than that.

I realize the plane below isn't an Airbus, nor flying at 5.45pm, but it's still meandering up the country at a low altitude. All it needs to do is track left a bit and the witness from their position are going to get Loch Lomond UFO video #2.

My conclusion: Terrestrial, plane.

If you're not feeling it, ask yourself this: What would I see if I was standing on a hill, looking towards 2 airports that receive a good few Airbus A320's and A321's - domestic flights (from elsewhere within the UK, a pretty small place), at dusk? Would you maybe see this video?
You almost would - but your eyes would reduce the lens flare because they can do that a lot better than cameras, even HD ones.

My only remaining curiosity is that you cannot see any wingtip lights, but maybe they are obscured by the brightness of the headlights and the flare effect cameras produce. I'd personally expect wing tip lights to become visible at some point (after videoing many of these lights until the moment the wingtips become visible, with a sigh and a disappointed shutdown of my camcorder).

But that's just my conclusion
