Careful now...

You don't want to be seen conversing with a progressive libtard who wears plaid flannel shirts and says "eh" at the end of every sentence.

LOL! Yes, your memory is indeed very sharp indeed! Thanks for that. Worth another read, IMO.

If memory serves, it began as a derogatory/satirical term directed at Bush Jr to indicate his lack of grey matter, overzealous patriotism, and his poor usage of linguistics.

That terminology then took a foothold and spread out to any American who also displayed these same flawed characteristics.

So the way I understand it, the derogatory term began in the United States by Americans, aimed at certain types of Americans.

Personally, I've never heard the term used by anyone outside of the US or US media until I joined ATS.

As for the word "Amerika", correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that was aimed specifically at the US government and has nothing to do with US citizens themselves ? Replacing the "c" with a "k" indicates a communist/dictatorship/tyrannical innuendo - which obviously has no relevancy with the citizens themselves, since citizens are not the ones who set non-sensical laws and policies.

As a seal f'ker myself, I have to whole-heartedly agree. We only use it in conversation pretty much in that context and also occasionally when we see someone from the US doing something stupid, while being overtly and proudly "patriotic". Usually we draw out the "'M" as well "mmmmmmMERICA!!" we say while excitedly shaking our jowls.

This has got to be one of the funniest rants I've read in a while. 'Mericans are proud. Non US citizens don't use it in a derogatory way for the most part. We don't use it as a slur. We don't think every person living in the US is a 'Merican.
Funny enough though, this post really is 'Merican. You're loud(ranting), proud (American, not Merican) and think the world needs to think your grind is a pressing important issue, when there is bigger fish to fry.

Your feelings are valid, though, but nothing is going to change.

What you've failed to realize is that the vast majority of people who write: " 'merica!!" Are Americans themselves and they are doing it in jest. .

I 'fail to realize' nothing with this.
Some are Americans kidding around.
Most are not. It's a slur.

ETA - when some Americans use it, it reminds me of black people using the 'n' word about themselves. It's a senseless thing to do.

Dude, you are off base with this one, I promise you.

Have you ever seen Colbert?

It's a bro-culture joke thing that has kinda gone over-the-top. If you don't know what bro-culture is, then you definitely do not understand the joke with the 'merica! meme. The VAST majority of people taking those pictures and "meme-ing" them, are Americans themselves who are just enjoying the joke.

I am sure there are some foreigners who may apply it as an insult or slur, but you know what?? It's not, and as long as we don't take it that way, then those people's intent is completely devoid of impact.

Yes, that's right, a word cannot have an offensive meaning unless people actually jump in front of it, fall down and cry, boo-hoo-hoo. Life is too short to pout over nonsense.

I guess I agree that a word cannOT be offensive unless someone is choosing to be offended, but it still carries a purely negative connotation none the less.

I think the word fag is much more offensive/hateful/negative but very widely & casually used.

I live in the LA/hollywood area & while there are little to no Muricans here, I can say without a doubt most people around me are genuinely stupid & ignorant.

As I said earlier - I put it on the same slur level as these -

'merican = dumb back woods dweller (no matter how smart they are or where they live, everyone is a dumb back woods hick)

towel head, sand monkey = dumb desert dwellers (no matter how smart they are or where they live, everyone is a dumb camel riding idiot)

It's a slur. It's not clever. It's not cute.

Man, I'll tell you what. The offensive one here is YOU.

Not some silly words written on electronic screens.

Just the way you refer to back woods people or people who ride camels.... seriously? You've exposed your own thought process by way of supposing to know what other people think.

Guess what, I've ridden camels. I grew up on a dirt road out in the sticks, and I could swing a hammer before I could count. I could tune a carburetor before I left elementary school, and I easily passed the MENSA test before I was in high school.

You know what's offensive? Your eagerness to be offended. Your attempts to tell others what THEY should find offensive.

If someone called me a camel jockey I would die laughing. Even if I WAS Arab or Persian. If someone called me a hick, hillbilly, redneck or country-bumpkin, I would spew my rootbeer/budweiser/milk&cereal through my nose right there on my front porch before standing up, saluting them and shouting 'goddam right I am!!'

Wrong. I was using an example of horrid things people say about muslims (sand monkeys, towel heads) and the common sentiment behind the words. Ditto 'merica. I was comparing slurs and showing how horrid they are. Get a grip.

So, let me get this straight: You are upset at the use of the word "Murica" for the connotations it may hold, but then go on to use these following words in just the first two pages of this thread ignoring or just plain ignorant of the connotations that these words possess -- LOL, unbelievable!

It's no different than calling the French 'frogs'.
It's no different than calling Canada CanYaDa and calling Canadians Seal F'ers
It's no different than calling Germans a bunch of adolfs or germs.
It's no different than calling Europeans a bunch of eurinals.

There are a lot of slurs about Muslims and those in Islamic countries.
Slurs about how backwards they all are ... and slurs about what they wear.
I'm sure you've heard them. Want me to list them?

'merican = dumb back woods dweller (no matter how smart they are or where they live, everyone is a dumb back woods hick)

towel head, sand monkey = dumb desert dwellers (no matter how smart they are or where they live, everyone is a dumb camel riding idiot)

So the slur 'merica is less bad then the slur towel head?

You can't see that using the slur 'merican to demean people as stupid or backwoods, is the same as using the slur sand-monkey to demean muslim people as stupid. You really can't see that it's the same?

You're just a walking encyclopedia for derogatory racist name calling - yeah? You actually felt confident in your head to go type all that out publicly? And you are a mod to boot! *literally laughing my arse off atm*

Then after all what you typed out above you go and state the following:

This rant is to point out that it is really mindless bigotry, not cleverness, to use those derogatory slurs about America and/or Americans. A slur based on nationality, ethnicity, culture, etc is a slur .. no matter how cute or clever the bigot thinks they are being.

A slur based on nationality, ethnicity, culture, etc is a slur ..

no matter how cute or clever the bigot thinks they are being.

Yup.... mindless bigotry indeed!

*Frogs
*Seal F'ers
*Adolfs or Germs
*Eurinals
*Towel Head
*Sand Monkey
*Dumb Camel Riding Idiot

What is unbelievable is that you have never heard of using a comparison. I posted them for a clearly stated purpose and it wasn't to use as a slur. Using the slur 'merica is the same as calling a Canadian a seal f'er .. it's the same as calling a muslim a towel head. It's derogatory and it should be acknowledged as such. I'm not 'ignorant of the connotations' .. I was pointing them out because people are ignorant of the connotation of 'merica and how it's comparable. If you can't understand what those were posted for then maybe you should refrain from comment so you don't embarrass yourself any further.

YOU don't get it. Those phrases are mindless bigotry and acknowledged as such. And yet 'mericans and uhmericans is a slur that doesn't get the same reaction from people and it's considered 'acceptable'. Using a comparison is BASIC conversation.

Perhaps when Americans stop using the term 'aliens' when referring to anyone who is not American then perhaps others would stop returning the favour.

Calling the rest of us 'aliens' is, quite frankly, insulting to the highest degree - like we are some sort of filth that popped in from another planet to mess up your tidy planet or something.

It's no different than

hipster
redneck
gang banger
health nut
tree hugger
geek

All simply used to describe a world view or cultural outlook. Are they stereotypes? Sure. But if they are used by the individuals themselves, they can't automatically be categorized as slurs particularly if it's not referring to something fundamentally unalterable like race, ethnicity, sexuality, etc?

Context matters.

But just admit it's a slur and admit the hate behind it.

I have admitted and apologized if I have ever offended anyone, at the same time I gave my understanding of the term and that being a slur towards warmongering Americans that spout the same crap the news tells them,

Lets just for one moment my understanding is correct( as you or no one else has said it isnt, just that its a slur and not what it means)
do you still stink its so wrong to hate well not hate (too strong of word for me) but not agree and/or have a strong dislike war and those that want it, so would be OK in your opinion if it is lets say a term used for lets say A president that said God told me to go war with Iraq or something like that?

Seriously what is it slur at, simply Americans being from the United states or is there a deeper meaning to it?
