Well it was certainly a warm-fuzzy bit of deceptiveness to wrangle the "middle class" to his cause, wasn't it? At times it felt as if the President whacked the status of the "middle class" down to near-poor levels as he implied increasing the minimum wage would help the "middle class."

In any event, there will be lots of post-address analysis by many people from all over the spectrum. Some of the typical liberal cheerleaders are already embarrassingly giddy, while the knee-jerk conservative curmudgeons continue to be pretty much against anything that comes out of the President's mouth.

As a catalyst for some hopefully interesting discussions, here's a bit of fun analysis of the actual text of the speech.

SOTU Word Cloud
First, the word-cloud visualization of words by frequency of use (focusing on major words).

Click the thumbnail below for the full-size version.

SOTU Word Frequency
And now the actual frequency of use, of all words used 10 times or more.

SOTU Theme Comparison
And finally this interesting comparison of major word groups, showing primary theme/frequency amongst all of President Obama's State of the Union speeches.

This is easily explained by Goebel's.

“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over”

Joseph Goebbels

Thus the repetition. Ie word frequency.

while the knee-jerk conservative curmudgeons continue to be pretty much against anything that comes out of the President's mouth

Guilty as charged.

All I heard was propaganda.

All I heard from this end was "Please pass the peanuts as we're in for a show."

We got it.

Peace

Funny he would say world more times than he would say America.
Makes one wonder where his allegiances are.

The our vs your number is pretty interesting to ponder too.

People still think voting exists & actually watch/care about things like the SOTU speech?

Mind boggling.

America (38) + American (19) + Americans (19) = 76
World = 22

You/Your - 36
Our - 109

Definitely strange.

"Our" is subjective as well & rather than being a statement of the Nation as a whole, could actually be considered a reference to Leaders, Democrats, Psychopaths or the Rich.

True, very true...

I suppose he gets the benefit of the doubt since he probably never even wrote the speech.

The emphasis on our as opposed to you.

Is exactly why he get's called socialist, marxist, communist.

Even in those forms of government's there is a 'few, intellectual', elite' that rule by proxy.

For the common 'good'.

I suppose the inclusion of the word "our" was reinforced so much to allay any thoughts or fears of disfranchisement with the system.

Republican or Democrat .. the State of the Union speech is always just a bunch of talking points for whatever team is in office at the time. It's always pathetic. The only thing they are good for are a heckling worthy of 'Mystery Science Theatre 3000'.

You're right, lol.
I was reading American, not America.

Reading comprehension -1.
Nothing wrong with a little humbling now and again.

I didn't watch it but was it the same as the last few where all of Congress would give standing ovations to signal the end of a paragraph? Made me sick to see it last time around.

The TPP deal should quash any semblance of Obama being a socialist.

Not really.

The TPP doesn't benefit anyone least of all us.

That is more Cloward, and Piven in action.

Overwhelm, and destroy the system.

Replace it with the 'new' and 'improved' version which ends up as new boss same as the old boss.
