Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says the travel advice his department issued yesterday on Indonesia has just been updated.
"Today we are issuing a fresh travel advice for Indonesia on the basis that we have credible reports of a possible terrorist attack on Hilton Hotels or possibly other western hotels," he said.
"We would urge Australians over the next period to keep well clear of these establishments."
Mr Downer says there are three Hilton Hotels in Indonesia in Jakarta, Bali and Surabaya.
He issued the warning in Lae in Papua New Guinea where he has been attending the annual Australia-PNG ministerial forum.

The Federal Opposition has backed the Government's travel advisory, urging Australian travellers to avoid international hotels in Indonesia linked to possible terrorist attacks.
The United States embassy in Jakarta has warned of a heightened risk from terrorists in the country ahead of the Christmas and New Year period.
The mission's latest message, which urged citizens to stay away from potential targets, follows alerts from Australia, Britain and New Zealand.
They said extremists behind a series of major attacks in the country could be plotting further actions over the festive period.
"In the days leading up to Christmas and New Year's holidays, the embassy continues to receive reports that terrorists are planning attacks against a wide range of targets," the message to US residents said.
"These attacks could occur at any time and could be directed against any location, including those frequented by foreigners and identifiably American or other Western facilities or businesses in Indonesia."

NINE homemade bombs packed in cylinders were found on a bus in West Java today amid new warnings of terror attacks.
National police chief General Da'i Bachtiar, speaking after meeting President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, did not say if police had made any arrests over the seizure.
His comments come two days after Western governments, led by Australia, warned that militants could strike soon against an international hotel in Indonesia, possibly one of three Hilton hotels.
Indonesian police said they had found two separate collections of bombs as they imposed a major alert following foreign warnings of an impending terrorist strike.
The discovery came as police were being deployed across Indonesia in a huge security operation after Australia said terrorists may be plotting to strike in the run up to Christmas, specifically naming the Hilton hotel chain.
Britain and the United States have also warned that their citizens in Indonesia over Christmas and the New Year faced a "heightened risk" of attack.
New Zealand has cautioned against non-essential travel to the country.
Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520
The Department urges Americans who choose to travel to Indonesia despite this Travel Warning to observe vigilant personal security precautions; to remain aware of the continued potential for terrorist attacks against Americans, U.S. or other Western interests in Indonesia; and to register with U.S. Embassy Jakarta, U.S. Consulate General Surabaya or the U.S. Consular Agent in Bali. Registration facilitates the U.S. Mission's contact with Americans in emergency situations. Americans in Indonesia should maintain a low profile, vary daily routines, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and keep abreast of local news and developments that may affect the security situation.
