LOl well I only have a dragon story I use to tell the kids

I may be 56, but I still grab a young adult/kid story book now and then. They can be quite imaginative and inspiring.

After reading many of the short story contest entries and posts that go with them I did notice that most replies come from the people that made an entry.

Why is that..? Perhaps the rest of our gazzilion ATS family is not interested what the other half of the family is doing?

This is the first time I entered the contest, has it always been this way?

The rules state that the only requirement is that the story has to have a significant dragon presence. What if the story is about seeking a dragon. So the dragon would not show up till the end of the story. Is that acceptable?

Hey Karmic! Long time no see! I would think that any Dragon presence is acceptable. However, I like seeing more than just a mention of a Dragon in a Story. That is just my preference though. Night Star and BFFT would be the one's to have the final say on that I would think. If You elude to a Dragon, and mention it a few times in the Text I would think it will help. But there are some entries that use Dragon as a Metaphor and I would think they count as a Dragon Story too. Right? Why not?!
I hope you get a legitimate answer soon from those in charge as I want to see something from You entered here!!!
In fact I look forward to it!!!

Later Bud! Syx.

Hi! I like supporting any writers here as I was supported when I first started writing stories and poems here, then entering contests. I think the others do that as well. It is polite, really. I mean I am here for fun and entertaining others, and I think a lot of the others are too. So it does feel good to get comments, stars and flags, etc. from whoever, to a Story to help Me get a feel for what people like.
The reason I comment on stories, poems is that I do them too and hang around this Forum to read others work as well. I really like the other People's stories/poems here. I like to let them know they are doing well in their writings. I like the diversity. I think some writers here may think that way too.
There a lot of people on ATS that hang in aliens threads, or political threads etc. that don't care to even read our stories. To each their own I guess. Right?

I hope this makes sense and may help to explain one of many reasons that authors tend to read and comment on other author's works......
Later. Syx.

I am excited for everyone involved here! This is a real fun time for Me!! I love it!! LOL!!! Dragons have been a big part of My life and are why I have what I do as an avatar. Well You know that. This Rocks!!!!

Yes I hope Heff gets in here to link His incredible Story!! It is amazingly well written! I have read some of His threads and see how He is a word-smith and am so Happy that He entered a Dragon Story. I love His writing skills. Always have.

As usual, I was standing in the shower, thinking about the great nothing - when a small idea filtered in. Here is my take on Draconis Occidentalis

Oh, already a writer and not concerned with winning anything or stars or flags. I just like to write.

O yes, it is good to have some feedback on our writing. I can compare it with painting somewhat, you have all the freedom to use whatever colour you like for creating what ever subject you like. Sometimes it does feel liberating.

Actually I am wondering if there is some thread in where writer and future writers can give each other pointers or advice. I guess there are some basic rules to satisfy requirements for a story?

After reading a lot of the stories here on ATS I see many different styles. "Composing" sentences for a story to run smooth is quite a challenge. It is also very nice to see how most contenders encourage others with their work. Very helpfull and fun all together.

Thx Syx

You are Welcome! As far as threads for writing help, I just entered 'Writers Tips' into the search box and got pages of hits. There a lot of threads on tips both specific and general. Check it out! Or start one of Your own.
Sorry I don't have much time right now but wanted to get back to You. Thought I'd mention the search function though at least. Hope You find what You need. Later for now, Syx.

Not a problem for me. It is still a story about dragons and he shows up in the end. I'll leave the final decision to BFFT of course.

Thanks for the suggestion Syx.. I did try the search engine and found this thread on the subject how to write a story. It will certainly contribute to improvement of my next entry.

Take a peek at mine
Mine is about seeking a dragon...or is it?

Or look at it this way - The Hobbit is technically a dragon story, and the dragon is only revealed in the later part of the book; this story would probably be accepted as part of the contest, were Tolkien a member on ATS today.

Finally finished reading all of the stories.

Well done everyone. There are some fantastic imaginative stories here proving once again the sheer wealth of writing talent here on ATS.

"I am impressed" said the Dragon, "It takes a lot to impress my species. I find these stories to be wonderful."

A lot of amazing entries and talented people! For those of you who are intimidated, please note that some of our past winners felt the same way. And even if one doesn't win, it doesn't mean that no one appreciates your work. So...please give it a try and let us enjoy your tale.

Here is my entry.
Non Writer Status

When Legends Live

I have to finish Part II, but publishing Part I gives me incentive to not just start writing and then leave off and start something else. I've yet to read other entries, as I didn't want my story influenced by others ideas. Once I finish part II and the story, I'll commence to reading all the other stories.

O yeah... the fantasy region somewhere in my brain has seriously been stimulated after writing my own short story and reading all these other stories about dragons. It is as if that region is still shifted in gear, maybe because my chineese astrological sign is Dragon. I am seriously thinking about writing a follow up.

The fact is that I am very curious what the magicians, wizards and sorcerers have writen in their conjuring-books concerning spells involving dragon egg-white and dragon shells. Writing about that will feel like a little boy who can buy anything in a candy-store..

Now I know what I want to be when I grow up... (Oops, maybe in an other lifetime)

LOL! The fact that You have those thoughts about Magicians Wizards and Sorcerors and their doings with those egg parts says that maybe You were Already one of those Conjurors in a Past Life-Time! I'd even bet they used the Scales and leathery Skin of Dragons in their spells!! Perhaps bone and blood as well? Hmmmmmm......
Write something Now about that stuff. Don't make us wait till the next life of Your's to read!!! LOL!!!

ETA: That brings to mind these lyrics from one of MegaDeth's songs, "The Conjuring"
"Arrange the symbols
Of the wizard and magician.
Light the candles,
Place the parchment paper in position
Between its leaves place
The lash from a black cat's eye,
A straw of a broom,
Fold, burn and centralize."
