Mummers + Drunks + Attitudes = losers

/rant on

I live in Philadelphia, PA where every year on New Years day the Mummers strut their stuff up and down the city. This event draws thousands and thousands of people from all along the East Coast. It's one of, if not the , oldest folk festivals in the country and while it should be a pleasant and happy time for all involved it typically breaks down as the day goes along.

What this really means is a bunch of idiot drunks get in various fender benders, fights, arguments, vandalize and in general act like fools all while dressed up in over the top outfits. In the months proceeding the holidays string bands practice the same songs over and over and over.

This time right now is the worst part of this whole day as people start to slow down some and the traffic gets overwhelming if you live in South Philly. Usually your degenerate drunks have been drinking all day so you find quality scenes like people urinating on steps or winners like the lady I saw earlier who pulled up to a stop sign and poured herself a drink while backing up traffic behind her. I so hope she gets arrested and loses her license for a substantial amount of time.

I am spoiled as a Resident of the most beutifull City on Earth at New Years eve Edinburgh.
The Castle lit up with Fireworks never ceases to amaze.

Nah, I feel your pain, but as one of your fellow statesmen in the western part of the state, I just wanted to show how I envy you in the East for having a damn sandwich that is just impossible to find at the other end of the same GD STATE!!!





Seriously? Come out west and tell me you can find a cheese steak sandwich that can touch one of yours! They don't exist! So for those of you with money to open a food joint? Come to W. PA and open a damn food joint that makes a good freakin cheese steak sandwitch!!!

Lots of good places to get cheesesteaks in Philly.. I guess that is like saying you can get sand at the beach..
Anyway..the people from out of town go to 2 or 3 places while the locals go to other places..

Don't tell anyone, but Hermitage, PA is dyeing for a damn good sandwich joint! If you have any friends with money just have em come and see the pathetic food options I have to live with in this area!

And if you do have friends? Send me a U2U and I would be glad to be a consultant for free! I am sick and tired of people in this area thinking they know what good food is!!!

Not a fan of the east coast cities myself so more power to ya' for putting up with it.

Too many "gastropubs" opening up in the area. I don't need foie gras on my burger or truffle oil on my fry pile.

I have to say that the best mashed potatoes that I ever had were made with truffle oil.... but they cost $12, and that was just for the potatoes!
You are right though, if you go to a pub, you aren't usually looking for 5 Star cuisine... or prices.

I live near Philly. Never been to the Mummers Parade. I don't understand what it is all about or the big deal about them. I saw some march in the July 4th Parade in Philadelphia one year. It didn't do anything for me. Mummers = whatever.

I can't imagine watching it all day on TV. Some do, otherwise Channel 17 would have carried something better.

I admit to watching Springer when I have that rare weekday off work.

Wholly for the entertainment value. It's like watching a movie, you know it isn't real, but let yourself get immersed enough to believe it for a moment.
