Didn't the J model gunships just start testing a little while ago?

About six months or so for firing tests IIRC. Everything I heard said they're beautiful platforms already.

I'm just disappointed that they did away with the 105mm and 40mm. All hail the U model.

I love the Bushmaster they replaced the 40 with. But getting rid of the 105 castrated them.

No J models yet, they are currently pushed back to maybe 2019. I'm not looking forward to them though, as I am a Flight Engineer.

The 30mm bushmaster is a great gun, but has flaws in how it's used. It was a necessity though, with the dwindling 40mm supply.

Don't worry, the 105mm is currently being tested on the AC-130W, and should be installed sometime 2015. Hopefully.

And yes, all hail the U model. I will be heading there soon.

The new PGM oriented route they're going is very capable, but I don't know how you top the old school hate throwdown that is 3000 rounds of 20mm, 250 rounds of 40mm, and 100 rounds of 105mm.

Thank God. The idea of a gunship without a 105 makes me sad. I don't care what anyone says about PGMs, nothing will ever replace flaming death from C-130s. Except maybe flaming death from a C-17.

AFSOC wasn't too keen on spending the money, but the people we support demanded it, so they are making it happen. There is just too long of a delay between the call for fire and the actual Griffin shot, compared to the call for fire and rounds impacting from the 105mm.

Any good (and unclass) stories that you can share? That would be a great write up.

I haven't been doing the gunship gig too long, so I wasn't around for Robert's Ridge or anything like that. I can tell some stories, but I don't want to pull this any more off topic than it already is.

I've got some experience with these guys. I'm a current crew member on AC-130H gunships, and these guys have always been top notch.

Edit to add my perspective.

Oh yeah, its always fun refueling C-130's with 20 degrees of flaps and a 300 foot per minute decent just so they can stay on the boom...

If it makes you feel better, we are firewalled on the throttles the entire time, except for every 5 minutes when we cycle the throttles out of max power for like ½ a second to comply with the tech data that say we can only set max power for 5 minutes.

Do you booms ever get annoyed hearing us call the TIT to the pilot all the time?
