Hi and Thanx! This morn while waking up I had thought of a couple reasons for building under ground. You are right in that there are many more than I had thought of then. And I'm sure even if I had thought of more, my list would be quite short, versus a list of reasons for those who built such places.
As they would have the main reason(s) for doing so in the first place!

Thanx Kantz. Nice explanation to Skalla, and Myself. Odd though like You mentioned that it took so long for this to be released to us. Perhaps them finding something(s) that 'They' did not want us to know about? You know, that gave them some clean up time? It just makes Me wonder...... Thanx again. Syx.

What in the world would motivate a large population of people to live underground?

Remember, so many native American creation stories begin with the people coming up out of the earth...?

Could make some sense if you can believe that perhaps the original inhabitants of these underground cities made it all the way across Russia to the Bering Sea land bridge (if you buy that theory, as well)... And who knows - I mean look at how many other cultures travelled great distances.

The creation stories just came to mind when I saw this thread and the size of that underground city. I may be totally wrong due to the dating of the site.

likely was a mine to begin with, and then upgraded to temple.
Metals and gemstones were believed to hold magical powers, the leaders or (gods) of the time were adorned with it.

Maybe cosmic influences for some nOraKat, through time periods many may have learned and passed down information to move underground due to it being safer from influences from above. Sort of like a house is the planet, which is safer location to live at on the roof or inside the house to avoid natural or unnatural threats.
good question

Fascinating! You mentioned here what I have always wondered. That is why were these types of cities constructed. What was going on, on this planet that made these necessary?

Exactly!

One has to wonder. This is SO COOL! I wonder if they'll find ancient records in there. That would rock the house, for sure.

This reminds me SO MUCH of the "Dune" series. Especially nowadays I am reminded of them - what with water becoming scarce, and radiation bombarding us.

I just saw a story on a news site this morning about how we might need to 'recycle' waste water soon. We must NOT take water for granted! Also - to any desalinization experts -----

GET BUSY!!!!

Truth is BuzzyWigs future populations will die due to the fact that fresh water sources become unavailable long before we run out of oil or gas simply due to our population in-cress and also because we pollute on such a massive scale.

Excellent find ... and rather anomalous... what were so many folks doing living underground in that region?

I have daydreams of gathering up scattered photons from the Universe to get pictures from humanity's deep past (and 5000 yrs isn't really deep) ... that would likely keep me interested for a lifetime or seven.

Heck, a glimpse into the future would be fine, too... I wonder if we could even begin to form a comprehensive understanding of a society after several thousand years of tech advancement?

Then again, the present is likely almost as interesting... and getting a comprehensive view of society is tough when you're smack in the middle of it... heh.

Looks to me that these are ancient Lava tubes, and the people made use of the ready made caverns, and/or expanded on them.

Was it too hot on the surface? Were there storms of meteors going on??? Were there perhaps Giants, or other nasties to hide from on the surface? Also i see that some of these have very low ceilings. Short statured inhabitants, or maybe it was simply that less material was removed this way, and that made it a little easier for construction. Not that removing solid rock would be very easy anyways......
Good Thread!
Thanx for the share.
Syx.

Well, I'm not saying its so, but...they just might have been hiding from...Ancient Aliens!

Where's Giorgio when we need him/

Not their own free will, that's for sure.

It would make an effective oubliette.

Useless defensively, but perfect for enslaving one's enemies.

The original 'Black Hole'.

I do not know enough about this particular site but if it is 5000 years old then it is no surprise it is underground. Ancient sites become underground because as generations upon generations live at a site, they 'bury' the past with rubbish etc. This is because these civilizations did not have garbage trucks, barges, and so on... they would fill in an old part of town as development of new buildings / structures occur in other places. Or they build on top of the old structures adjacent to areas that have been filled in. It is very interesting to think of how this land would evolve over time especially when you are looking at thousands of years of habitation. Cool find though, very interested in learning more about this site!

I'm largely motivated by actual dreams even more than daydreams, and that's saying something, but i had this dream some years ago before i knew of any caves in Turkey or had researched ancient mysteries of the past, i wrote it in full here, what i see in the photos of the caves is exactly as i saw in my dream in terms of the rock cut pens;

There was a curtained entranceway to the rear of the room, i drew back the curtain and entered into a cavernous series of labyrinth passageways carved into the rock. As i made my way through these passages i began to come come across the blackened, seemingly burnt, bodies of women with large dead babies lying alongside them, the wombs of the women appeared to have been torn open and the unborn babies removed.

These were laid in or close to cubicles cut into the rock off the passageways, with low retaining walls such that they had the appearance of pens, i began to see more and more of these bodies until i saw a great number and then i awoke.

Of course i trust my own dreams more than any Turkish archaeologists interpretation...

Clearly, that is not the case here.

These caves were excavated into solid rock, they were not accreted into the form of walls and rooms, they haven't "become underground".

So, first let me say I am even more fond of you after reading that... heh... but what is your conjectured reason for the underground living? Hiding from someone/something is, of course, an obvious reason... but are you aware of any likely candidates in the region? Prehistoric Nazis or Huns? Any cometary debris fields? Roaming hungry demigods?

I know humans tend to group up and be cruel... and that's why walled cities were the norm... but Turkey had some serious excavations being dug in that era... something veeery bad must have been above ground. Something walls couldn't keep out. Likely a decent idea for an historical fiction.

I don't really know i didn't see the cause in the dream only the end result, the bodies were blackened as if having been burnt and seemed to have met a violent end, the suggested reason because of the strange nature of the children they were giving birth to, so perhaps if there were weird happenings at that place they did have much to fear from other peoples and went underground, of course i can't expect people to take my dreams into account but if i went through those caves i'd be sort of expecting to see the bodies, even though long gone.
