You can't make this stuff up. Here, from ITAR-TASS, the only remaining reliable Russian news source:

LUHANSK, November 19. /TASS/. The leader of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), Igor Plotnitsky, has challenged Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to a duel in an effort to “put an end to the war.”

In an open letter to Poroshenko, Plotnitsky said the duel will choose the winner in the confrontation of the self-defense forces with the Kiev government to stop the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine.

“Let’s follow the example of the ancient Slavic leaders and glorious Kazakh chiefs* and clash in a fight. The one who wins will dictate** the terms to the opposite side,” Plotnitsky said.

The LPR head suggests that the Ukrainian president should pick the venue for the duel himself and also offers him to select the weapon.

“I do not oppose a live broadcast on any TV channel, if you believe this is possible. It is up to you to choose the venue for the fight and the weapon. Each side has a right to bring 10 observers-seconds and 10 media representatives to ensure that the fight is fair,” he said.

He looks serious about this:

Just as the petty Fascist leaders of Central Europe modeled themselves after Mussolini and Hitler, the would-be leaders of " Novorossiya" are beginning to imitate Vladimir Putin's macho play acting:

Awfully grand uniform for the master of a few hecaters, don't you think?

Actually, as a former competitive fencer, I agree with you. The world would be a much safer place if so-called " leaders" settled their differences like gentlemen. This Plotnitsky does not look like a gentleman, however.

Putin does indeed control all the media in Russia, ITAR-TASS is one of the few outlets that refuses to publish outright lies without larding them with the appropriate " allegeds."

Plotnitsky looks like a tough customer, but why is he wearing that comic opera uniform?

I intend to when I have time. Meanwhile, it certainly looks like he's putting on the airs of a turn-of-the-last-century petty aristocrat.

It is indeed a photoshop... but no-one is going to question the sanity of a man who challenges someone to a duel in the 21st century?

It looks like my assertion was right: people dig idiotic macho posing in a leader. No wonder Putin remains so popular,

Well it is Russian media so they could make it up, but in this case I doubt they did.

I do enjoy the enthusiasm, but it just shows how some cannot remove themselves from the past, and a duel is about as far in the past as one can go.

Putin has been deliberately balkanizing Central and Eastern Europe and Western Asia since day one, splitting tiny ethnic enclaves off of larger states and making them dependent on "Mother Russia": South Ossetia, Transdniestria, Abkhazia and now Novorossiya. This fits in with his program of narodni, a sort of artificial nationalism akin to the Germanic concept of das Volk.. It is based on romantic 19th Century Russian intellectual ideals of the "Russian soul." It is not surprising that some of his puppets would behave like characters out of Lermontov or Tolstoy.

Oh you know you just kicked the equivalent to a hornets nest with that...even though it is true the backlash from the pro Russians should be interesting to read.

Although a duel would be something to watch...hell think of the pay per view buys it could generate Ukraine could be out of debt with just one duel.

You know what I say they do it...and I might pay for this one.

I have always said let's put the leaders in a cage and the winner takes all...I can see it now the newest reality show on TV.

"World Leader Duels" instant money maker.

Better yet: "Historical Leader Smackdown," featuring Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev in the rematch of the century!
