This is one of my stock questions in a moment of quiet.

It has to be food and it has to be edible.

Something you would normally eat happily but could not be eaten and enjoyed on hot buttered toast and maybe popped under a grill for a few moments(optional)

It is harder than you think, in 10 years I have only agreed on half a dozen and two of those were disputed by others.

Give it your best shot and good luck.

Relish

...although that is a condiment

grapefruit

If relish is some form of fruity sugary but sour condiment that could be quite nice in my opinion.

Grapefruit I would agree but what if it were put on a sweet bread like brioche? maybe a dollop of (heavy) cream?

Sour keys. You know the chewy little five cent candies coated in citric acid and sugar.

I would say marmite or vegemite but I would not happily enjoy those things in any shape or form, so I suppose ill have to go with the candy.

Maybe orange juice

I had an idea until you put limits on it. It's probably a good thing, anyway. It was going to be gross.
Now, for the topic: I think spinach would be nasty on hot buttered toast. How about onions?

Slow roasted onions all caramalised i have tried as starter. Spinach in a cream sauce smeared on hot buttered toast is epic, especially if you grate a litlle nutmeg on top.

Marmite/vegemite is a matter of opinion.

Horrible sweets was one of the five but I did say something you would eat anyway? why would you eat such things

There is no such thing as too much butter, I am English and butter is good.

Butter.

Even more more butter

I am English but are you saying sugary apples would not be good on hot buttered toast?

We would call that a dessert and be happy for it. Especially if there was a dusting of cinnamon on top.

This was such an easier game when there were five of us, yes oatmeal on toast would be pretty bad.

But what if you were to make a loose oatmeal and then drizzle with honey and toast it with a dollop of cream on top?

Your liberal use of various dollops, dustings, and drizzles will make anything palatable.

Anything that isn't butter.

I think that just about covers it for me anyway
