(Reuters) - The FBI has warned local authorities of a threat that Islamic State militants would blow up the Memphis & Arkansas Bridge spanning the Mississippi River, an agency spokesman said on Tuesday.

The bridge is a major route connecting Tennessee and Arkansas. The Federal Bureau of Investigation passed the threat on to local police in a bulletin out of an "abundance of caution," spokesman Chris Allen said.

"This is an unsubstantiated, anonymous threat," he said, adding that there was no useful intelligence arising from it.

Allen had no details on when the threat was received or how. The warning was reported by Fox13 News in Memphis.

The television station quoted the FBI warning as saying that according to an anonymous tipster, Islamic State had instructed a person in Memphis "to blow up the Memphis-Arkansas bridge on an unknown date, activating ISIS terror cells in the United States."

So is this a lame unsubstantiated, anonymous threat or is the a serious one. Why would they report such a thing? Is it like a ~probably nothing serious, but just a heads up~ thingy?

The last part strikes me - "to blow up the Memphis-Arkansas bridge on an unknown date, activating ISIS terror cells in the United States." It would make sense, no controllable communication is needed the MSM will tell you about it.

the thing was made in 1949

Someone must have evaluate the structure and saw it close to collapse so they decided it was the best to preventively blame ISIS in case something happens

Of all the targets in the states, why would that be one?
Is it even a landmark?

I think its because its a major thoroughfare and destroying the bridge would mean some economic losses and what have you.

I get that, but seems like there would be higher profile targets.

Then again, I may just be over thinking it

Probably costs less for the ministry of truth to publish ISIS than Al-Qaeda, remember those guys?, lol.

Whatever floats their terror alert boat.

All one has to do is ram it with a big enough barge to bring it down. Even 'Terrs' know that.

False Alarm.

False flag in the making?

Well, hypothetically speaking, if i was to attack the us, it wouldn't be major targets like an airport or stadium.
Big targets attract big attention.

I really wonder about this though. If they re willing to publicly name a place, would it be smarter to feed misinfo on the target?

Or kick it, from the looks of it. One swift kick and suddenly we're on alert for people with well-developed thighs and some degree of soccer/football training.

Rule one of False Flags: Plausible Deniability

If you warn people of an attack and it actually happens, fingers often point to the one who did the warning first.

Better to have an "unplanned, no warning" attack, that way you can plausibly say "I had no idea this would happen!" And deflect blame elsewhere.

It is in the National Register of Historic Places... However, it doesn't seem to have great of value as a target. While the bridge handles about fifty thousand vehicles daily, it's not the only crossing. The I-40 bridge to the north, while it would be more congested, would pick up the extra traffic.

In a related story, FBI reports ISIS threatened to boycott Chik-fil-A --or they threatened to show up at the same time at the drive through.

Something bad like that.

If the bridge were dropped in the Mississippi River it would block river commerce. That is a big deal.

There is a vulnerability due to its design, but I'm not going to tell anybody how to drop old river spans with a few pounds of whoopee…

If they don't address the age issues one day portions of it will fail of its now accord.

Even Wiki carries the report of terr threat to the bridge. Now thats what I call solid coverage of events…

On Tuesday, December 23, 2014, in an online breaking news article from the Chicago Tribune's online edition, through wire reports, it was stated that,: "The FBI had warned local authorities of a threat that Islamic State militants would blow up the Memphis & Arkansas Bridge" in an anonymous and unsubstantiated threat.

That IS the I-40 bridge. It connects Memphis, TN to West Memphis, AR.

edit- my bad, it is the I-55 bridge.

With the lower water levels river commerce is already at a lull. The debris would be cleared pretty quickly as well. Within a matter of weeks.

The Memphis & Arkansas is I-55. The Hernando de Soto is north on the river a little ways and handles I-40.

Edit to add: You must have edited your post as I typed mine. No big deal.
