Ok heres the idea which I had and thought it deserved its own thread just for discussion sake. How about we begin to brainstorm on how to replace all technology and goods with solid light;

The idea has been around sincs the 1930's makes one wonder if it already exists and we just dont know about it. Meaning it could be a recycled rehashed idea of sorts.

Meaning with solid light our society creates transformable clothes, tv's, vehicles, cell phones, foods, nanobots, MRI's houses, computers, supercomputers, new forms of life, weapons, even make solid light avatars of ourselves, download knowledge into our minds, remake entire universes within tiny particles and create anything we could ever want.

Think TRON and Star Trek but better where everyone can be like the Q from Star Trek with thier own solid light matrixes indistinguishable from reality. Sounds impossible, not really I believe we are on the path to a solid light future where we can make or remake anything with solid light.

Basically we could be similar to a civilization of Green Lanterns from DC Comics/or Quasars from marvel comics.

The basic idea is to use solid light to replace nanotechnology and evolve society in every way shape and form and go from nanotech to sub atomic.

Breaking time-reversal symmetry
Haldane had suggested that it might be possible to create an entirely new class of materials with exceptional properties determined by their topology. Mathematically, objects have the same topology if they can be transformed into each other by continuous deformations, such as compression or stretching. For instance, an orange could be deformed into a banana. If the transformation requires a cut, then two objects are topologically distinct; for example, a Möbius strip can not be transformed into a normal strip without first cutting and then reassembling it.

ETH Professor Tilman Esslinger and his group at the Institute for Quantum Electronics investigate artificial graphene; its honeycomb structure consists not of atoms, but rather of light. The researchers align multiple laser beams in such a way that they create standing waves with a hexagonal pattern. This optical lattice is then superimposed on potassium atoms in a vacuum chamber, which are cooled to near absolute zero temperature. Trapped in the hexagonal structure, the potassium atoms behave like the electrons in graphene.

Solid-state physicists had hoped they would be able to create the Haldane model with real graphene - in vain until now, says Esslinger: "Now we've done it with a different system. This is a beautiful and significant new step."

"We work with atoms in laser beams because it provides us with a system that can be controlled better and observed more easily than the material itself,"

A group of scientists group led by Harvard professor of physics Mikhail Lukin and MIT Professor of Physics Vladan Vuletic has made photons link up to form something like a molecule. It’s a state of matter that was previously only theoretical. Such “solid” light has been a fixture in science fiction — Star Wars’ lightsaber is the most famous example.

Making lightsabers though, isn’t what the scientists were after. The real use for photons that interact with each other is in quantum computing. One of the challenges to making a working, reliable quantum computer is that each bit is contained in a single photon. But because photons don’t interact with each other, information can’t be exchanged the way it is in a conventional computer that works using electrons.

A 20-year-old specializing in DIY lasers has apparently made his own version of a functional Star Wars lightsaber. In a video demonstration, he uses the device to light things on fire — paper, a match, even a ping-pong ball.

Wannabe Jedi Knights rejoice, for scientists have discovered that the famous lightsaber weapon wielded by Luke Skywalker and his ilk in the long-running space opera saga might one day exist beyond the realms of fiction.

Harvard and MIT physicists writing in the new edition of Nature say they have discovered a way to bind photons together in order to form a new molecule which behaves almost exactly like George Lucas's deadly devices.

Scientists Discover a Way to Turn Light Into Matter .

Now, scientists at the Imperial College London in England are working to develop a photon-photon collider that might be able to turn light into matter, which is a process that also takes place during the largest explosions in the universe called gamma-ray bursts.

In 1905, the famous physicist Albert Einstein theorized that light was actually a particle, which helped explain the photoelectric effect.

Now, scientists at the Imperial College London in England are working to develop a photon-photon collider that might be able to turn light into matter, which is a process that also takes place during the largest explosions in the universe called gamma-ray bursts.

The idea is based on a theory from 1934, which claimed that when two photons, or light particles, smash together, it would create matter in the form of an electron and a positron.
Professor Steven Rose from the Department of Physics at the Imperial College London is quoted as saying: "What was so surprising to us was the discovery of how we can create matter directly from light using the technology that we have today in the UK. As we are theorists, we are now talking to others who can use our ideas to undertake this landmark experiment."

You sort of have to have an understanding of what was done, not just the cool phrases.

As on the other thread where you posted this, there wasn't any "solid light", it's a phrase a journo came up with when he didn't quite understand what was going on.

eta: And it's covered already - linky!

If you want to actually get a feel for what was done, look up "Jaynes-Cummings dimers" and it will explain it...you'll also realize why the journalist couldn't understand the source material.

"Ultimate Digital Happiness". Nice deception placing the Mantra over a real background.

Computer reality is not the 'real' world. Light isn't "solid".

This concept wants us to plug into a Matrix style world. Some will eagerly substitute real life for a programmable one with specific outcomes. The real world will still be outside the tank farm.

Thanks for your input, you sound like someone who may be in the know about some possible future technologies we may be able to access eventually to improve our civilization.

If you have any other info you would like to share relavent to the topic it would be much appreciated.

Well, mbkennel's explanation is on that thread I linked to...

By the way, about the article.

It's a complex quantum optics experiment.

What's the most simple and well known quantum optics device? The maser/laser of course. The original theory was by Einstein. (By the way, this is a case where in Einstein vs Bohr, Bohr was wrong, he didn't believe spontaneous emission was possible). However, the standard simple theory of the laser that you learn about in your undergraduate coursework is only partly quantum mechanical. The atom (in particular the electron) is described with quantum mechanics, but the electromagnetic field is not, it's still mostly Maxwellian classical field.

To really do things right you need to use quantum field theory for the E&M part too, and that basic interaction is the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian, the most simple theoretical model for a laserish thing with QED. There are some strange experimentally observed effects that you get with this that you don't see with the simpler theory. (My knowledge on this is from reading Wikipedia, not expertise)

Anyway, the paper is a theoretical & experimental study of what happens when you combine interacting chains of these systems, plus an interaction with a background environment.

Overall it is a study in the area of combined optical &electronic systems in the full quantum realm, eventually important for quantum computing.

The "popular summary" from the original source article is:

Our understanding of how large numbers of particles coexist in nature is based on thermodynamics and the underlying theory of statistical mechanics. The simplest case is when the particles do not interact with each other and when the system is in equilibrium, so that its macroscopically observable state does not change with time. However, the world around us is rarely in equilibrium, and most of the dynamical processes we observe occur far from equilibrium and also involve strong interactions. The study of physical systems in this regime encompasses topics of fundamental importance to science, such as dissipation, quantum decoherence, emergence of classicality from intrinsically quantum systems, symmetry breaking, and even how equilibrium is itself established. We apply tools developed for quantum computing to investigate these subjects.

We realize a system of strongly correlated photons, which, when populated with many photons, exhibits classical Josephson oscillations. A loss of photons from the system into the environment leads to a slowing down of the oscillations; at a critical number of photons, the period of the oscillations is seen to diverge, giving rise to a dynamical quantum phase transition far from equilibrium. In contrast with standard expectations, this transition is into a state displaying quantum behavior, namely, the quantum revivals of Schrödinger cat states. This experiment is the first realization of a dissipative quantum simulator built using standard solid-state fabrication technologies.

Our findings open new directions for future studies of strongly correlated many-body physics using photons, where dissipation is both central and well controlled. We expect that our results will have broad implications in fields such as condensed matter physics.

Source

And after you read THAT, you get an idea what the paper's going to be like in the more rigorous bits.

But basically, it's an experiment from quantum electro-dynamics that says the math predicts if you arrange certain types of atoms in a lattice in a tuned cavity in just the right way, they'll trade photons back and forth in such a way that the photons appear to be trapped in the lattice. It's horrifically tricky to do. What it's good for is experimentation with entanglement and quantum computation. At least that's what people tend to do with it.

It doesn't make "solid light" or "liquid light" in some form that falls out the bottom and you can put in a light saber. Or make a sammitch out of. Or a sex doll on a holodeck. It's an elegant demonstration of QED in the real world, though.

LOLz thats some good and relavent information thanks indeed. I was looking around and just found a few math lectures nothing TRON-like.

One field I was kind of into for leisure daydreaming was plasmonic nanotubes. However I think with manipulation of light photons to create even nanostructures we may be entring a new type of technology so to say.

Plasmonics: Manipulating, Trapping and Harvesting Light at the Nanoscale
Light is the fastest means of sending information. However, there is a fundamental mismatch between the current ability to miniaturize electronic circuitry and the ability to confine light. Optical devices such as light lasers and optical fibers cannot have dimensions smaller than half the wavelength of light (sub-micron), whereas electronic circuitry can be made much smaller (nanoscale). Plasmonics is the science whereby conventional light (photons) can be ‘squeezed’ into nanoscopic volumes, much smaller than the wavelength. This is achieved by coupling photons to free electron oscillations of a metal, which propagate along the metal-dielectric interface. This phenomenon will allow electromagnetic signals traveling at the speed of light to be confined on length-scales unachievable with conventional optics and usher in the age of integrated opto-electronic circuitry and ultra-fast computing. Additionally, the ability to manipulate light on the nanoscale will improve the light the harvesting capability of solar cells, and the efficiency of solid state light-emitting device (LED) lighting and lasers. The primary focus of this research is on nanoscale engineering of light generating and light harvesting processes in organic polymer semiconductor materials and plasmonic nanostructures.

The field of plasmonics aims to exploit the unique optical properties of nanometallic structures to control and manipulate light at the nanoscale. The optical response of these structures is unique because, unlike dielectrics, metals (such as gold and silver) have a negative dielectric function, which allows them to support collective electron excitations known as ‘surface plasmons’. These resonances exist between the metal surface and the surrounding dielectric and produce extremely high local electric field intensities. Moreover, these properties are not present in the constituent bulk material.

What if I told you that you are already in that future, simply sleeping through the past as an education?

Dream Manipulation and Dimensional Soul Sleep

I come to this conclusion based on the facts. We are designed in a created image (Genesis 1:27).

The Father is Aleph Bet (Strong House). He uses letters (alphabet) to write the word into light.

John 1

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

Light shined on letters of information is Word (chains of letters). As a shadow to this process, we know DNA is the twist in the sequence. In the Bible, Hebrew is the first language of the East (Concrete). It has 22 letters. Greek is the abstract alphabet of the West and has 24 letters. Together, we have two chiral sides of creation. Mirrored by this, there are 46 chromosomes making the chiral body housing our soul.

This is a perfected technology, or what the Bible calls the fruit of knowledge. By transmuting the fruit (biting the apple), we die. Far from being a future dream of creating our own reality, this is the means to our end. Why are we in an image learning this? Because we are already at the end of this DVD called reality with God. The replay is how we got there from here. Time is the wave we ride as we learn the whole history and not simply the parts. You must be born again to see the end. You have been here for many generations. To an eternal being, time is irrelevant.

To know, you must see it in sequences of letters making word.

Wake up and remember. The copies were necessary.

Hebrews 9

23 It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

We wait for the LOGOS to come again. He is the WORD written by the Father. He is at the end preparing our estate. The groom returns for the bride. Less than a disconnected story from the minds of shepherds, this is our future being shown in allegory.

Who are we?

Matthew 18

10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

Below, we are a child learning sentience with pathos. Above, we are the Angel waiting for us to return to our first estate. We face the Father, yet are entangled to the body below by dimension. Your vision of the future is real, yet you are not there until you learn how to manage good and evil. Knowledge must clothe the naked.

We are promised a new Robe and new Crown. Body and Mind will be new again.

Revelation 6

10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” 11 Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[e] were killed just as they had been.

These thoughts of future creation from the given creation are flattery at their finest. The sincerest form of flattery is imitation. We are in a fractal that is orthogonal. All right angles lead back to the original invariant symmetry found in nature already. Consider the aim of the video presented. Its premise is ultimate happiness by overcoming nature. I am simply showing you that we are imitations / images / copies of the original. Rather than toil to get there ourselves, it is offered freely. The only thing standing in our way is our own pride. We toil on, yet this too is a purpose. We cannot value where we go unless we journey on the path to get there. I am simply showing you that we are already there looking back. Reality is an image we already created.

Midrash - Future bliss can neither be imagined, explained, nor described. We know nothing of its nature, form, greatness, or beauty, its quantity or quality. This much one should know, the phrase, "the world to come," does not imply that it is a world yet to be called into existence; it exists already, but the phrase is employed to describe the life into which those who are in the present stage of existence will be transposed when they throw off this mortal coil.

P. But to what good end is pain thus rendered possible?

V. All things are either good or bad by comparison. A sufficient analysis will show that pleasure, in all cases, is but the contrast of pain. Positive pleasure is a mere idea. To be happy at any one point we must have suffered at the same. Never to suffer would have been never to have been blessed. But it has been shown that, in the inorganic life, pain cannot be thus the necessity for the organic. The pain of the primitive life of Earth, is the sole basis of the bliss of the ultimate life in Heaven.

Some seek through meditation, others through study and communication through the internet. The idea that any tool could essentially be used for a variety of purposes is basically what I am getting to with some of this information, and the creation of new tools as a society like our phones, fabrics, robots, and computers just sharing new and old ideas for the fun of it. Thanks again for your loving light you are most welcome here.
