HE IS SAFE.....omg thanks to those who posted with help. Yes, they have blocked all the mobile signals in the area. I was only there a couple of months ago to see my brother at work. The cafe is right across from the commonwealth bank, channel 7, sky news and next door to the reserve bank. NSW parliament house is just at the top of martin place.

There would be more than 13 hostages i reckon. My brother took me and my daughter there for what he said is the best hot chocolate ever...and it was. That was about 10.30am and it was jam packed then.

Rather, it appears to be a Shahada flag, which represents a general expression of faith in Islam, though has been co-opted by various jihadist groups.

Greg Barton, a terrorism expert from Monash University, says that "getting hold of an (Islamic State) flag would be quite difficult, and people will make do with what they have got".

That means it doesn't help confirm or rule out that the hostage-takers' affiliation is with Islamic State or any other group."
