While there's no doubt that the numbers of background checks have increased dramatically in the last several years, the difference hasn't been
quite THAT dramatic. The significant yearly increases actually began around 2005, when there were 8.9 million checks per year. By 2008, Bush's
final year in office, there were 12.7 million...roughly 1 million per month. That number has steadily increased under Obama, peaking at 21.1
million last year...about 1.75 million monthly. You can find that information

This year looks to be first decline since 2002, but before the antis get all hot and bothered by that, this year is still on pace to have the
highest level of background checks of any year except 2013, with just over 20 million. In fact, if you toss out January of 2013, the period from
February through November of this year has actually had a
higher number of background checks than last year did.
