The ability for this to occur is what was at questuom to me more than it actually occuring in this circumstance.

I can't even access my orginal source article, I keep getting a 522 error.

When coming across things like this, copy/paste a line or two, from the source, into a search engine. That will usually bring up other hits. Sometimes those hits link back to reasonably trustworthy sources. But, even then, you should keep following the source from each article as you read.

In the example of this particular hoax - a search did lead to several other sources, some a lot more viable than a blog. The problem, then, was that those more legitimate sources sourced back to the blog itself.

One huge circle.

This, BTW, happens quite often. Things in this day and age go viral so fast, with the media wanting "the scoop" that it is incumbent upon us to backsource for ourselves.
