Confessions of a Public Defender

in light of recent events , i thought i would post something that i read a while back ,It really made me think and question .
and i hope it does the same for you . I know where i stand on this issue , but i am curious to know how members feel about what the author is professing .

Still liberal after all these years.
I am a public defender in a large southern metropolitan area. Fewer than ten percent of the people in the area I serve are black but over 90 per cent of my clients are black. The remaining ten percent are mainly Hispanics but there are a few whites.

I have no explanation for why this is, but crime has racial patterns. Hispanics usually commit two kinds of crime: sexual assault on children and driving under the influence. Blacks commit many violent crimes but very few sex crimes. The handful of whites I see commit all kinds of crimes. In my many years as a public defender I have represented only three Asians, and one was half black.

As a young lawyer, I believed the official story that blacks are law abiding, intelligent, family-oriented people, but are so poor they must turn to crime to survive. Actual black behavior was a shock to me.

Thats a racist statement. Skin pigment is not responsible for crime . Unless you buy into the racist attitudes of states who promote racism as a tool to divide the populace and keep them fighting amongst themselves. Its called divide and rule. If you need to see more clearly into that rabbit hole, look at what is occurring in Ferguson.

no its not a racist statement , however your choosing to make it one . did you read the whole confession ?
he makes it clear that he is not raciest. he has a right to speak out about what he sees in the his line of work .

ETA: And the statement is clearly racist. Racists always hide behind claims of equality and then say stuff like, "crime is racially oriented".

The Human species is one species not many, or a "race". Dividing amongst skin pigments is a control measure. Buy into it and you got more war along the lines of class war, religious war, etc.

No, that's not a racist statement. I think you don't understand what racism is. And to be honest, you can break down types of crimes by race and make an intelligent statement like what he did. It's not racism when you break down statistics and make a point with that data--in fact, that's called logical and rational.

The comment wasn't make with a cause-effect relationship in mind, it was just a statistical point made with verifiable data.

And I'm sorry, but it is readily apparent in modern times that no one oppresses the black community more than the "leaders" of that community. You want to find the perpetual-motion machine of racial divide, start looking there.

Considering this guy works with disadvantaged black youth, I believe everything he said. The question is "WHY"???

What is going on in this country that 20-year-old black women have 5 children from 5 absent fathers?
Why do these women have no ethical problem living off the government?
Why do these young men have no grasp of their legal trouble?
Why do they think, in spite of the evidence, that they'll not be punished?
What is going on in the inner city that produces people who are so far out of touch with society and reality?
Why don't they value work?
What lessons are they getting from birth that are forming their opinions, attitudes and beliefs?

I don't think there's something wrong with black people. There's something wrong with the environment and the lessons they're learning there. I think any person, regardless of skin color, would come out of that environment with the same attitudes, issues and beliefs. It's not about being black, it's about a cycle.

If you snatched a young person out of there and raised them in a completely different environment, they would be a different person. Living in the environment, it's impossible to get out of it, and a downward spiral continues with every generation...

It's not because these black people are bad or lack intelligence, drive or creativity. It's because they were raised to accept their fate. No matter how hard it is for some to believe, this situation is the result of slavery, and the following years of oppression, racism and bigotry that is the history of this country.

until each and everyone of them make it on the cover of vibe magazine with a chart topping hip hop album. Beyonce isn't claiming slavery gave her the success, right? She's living a wonderful life despite all this "oppression".....

Looks like they might just need another go-to line now....

The haves play the have nots like a piano so they can get more money,THEY don't care about RACE ,they casually lie ineffectively without a care and they want to get money from it,and milk it until the end of creation if they can.
The new law is simple "Do as thou wilt until stopped".

I don't think that this defender means to come across as racist. But he is right when it comes to the black culture in major cities. In the larger cities, people of certain cultures tend to self segregate. As such, a certain criminal pattern does emerge.

In smaller cities/towns where people are less likely to segregate themselves and people know one another, a totally different culture arises. And a totally different type of criminal mind-set as well.

I would accuse this public defender of painting with a broad brush, and possibly even writing this letter in the heat of frustration after losing another case he knew he could not win.

I disagree but that's not important.
I'll rephrase the question.

How long will they be using that as a reason to fail? How many presidents of African descent will it take to convince the African descent community that they can achieve great things? One of their own obtained the highest office in the land. That should be a big clue to them that they can thrive in this country, should it not?

Also, everything I say to blacks must be at about the third-grade level. If I slip and use adult language, they get angry because they think I am flaunting my superiority.

Most blacks are unable to speak English well. They cannot conjugate verbs. They have a poor grasp of verb tenses. They have a limited vocabulary.

Such racist BS.

Of course there are people here who agree with his ignorant lies.

Also had to make sure the lawyer was liberal, nice touch.

This entire "story" smells, no reeks of the "Essay by a teacher in a black high school" story then went around a year or so ago.

Masqueraded racism is all I get out of it.

I think he should broaden his horizons.

I live in an area that has a fairly good representation of many races and cultures, and I don't know any Afro-Americans or Hispanics that match this person's descriptions, at all.

I don't see how this person can honestly be a good representative for the people he claims to serve, when he has such a negative bias towards his clients. I think he should take a much closer look at what his clients are telling him. Obviously it is quite evident to the clients, that this person sees them as subhuman and that this individual feels nothing but contempt and disdain for the people he claims to want to help.

I believe this man needs to do a bit of soul searching and then he either needs to find another form of employment or he needs to take his talents to an area where he will have the predominately white clientèle that he prefers.

It's nothing to do with them being black, because this is a story made up by an American about an American city.
This does not correlate to other countries so it's not a story about race, but about urban cultures in America.
