Gandhi was actually pretty racist against the black Africans during is time in South Africa. He was for equality for Indian immigrants, but was for segregation against the natives like the Zulus. He even gladly participated in the Xhosa Wars, then known as the Kaffir Wars ("kaffir" technically means "unbelievers" like the word "heathens", but is used as a racial slur against black people by many cultures). So being to the left of him isn't really outrageous.
