Some people come here on purpose to boss, bully, and manipulate others. These people have PDS Personality Disorder Syndrome. Some are mentally unstable, have aspberger's syndrome, lack self esteem, or just get high on being mean to others. Develop thick skin and ignore these attention grabbers. I do. I have relatives who have ruined the entire family with their mean behaviors. Ats seems less professionally done when rudeness pervades. It is bad enough people ruin other's holiday seasons at gatherings.... I guess these people are just everywhere.

You're an adult asking mainly teenagers and children to behave like adults.

It won't happen - just look at classrooms. ATS is just another classroom.

It has to be a pretty bad statement by someone for me to report them, otherwise, I call them out and stick up for whoever the poster is being rude to. That's how I usually handle things anyway. There will always be people we agree or disagree with, but it is important to be civil and have respect for our fellow members.

But it isn't just children. Sometimes it is adults acting like children.

It's not only on the forums though, it's in the U2U's as well, some people don't know how to let things go, a bit of writing gets them all worked up and completly ruins their day

What's been bothering me lately (you can see how often I post, not much and this is why) is there seems to be "teams" who go into different areas and just flat out smack down other members. They "usually" don't do anything like name calling, but they gang up on people, discounting them in such a way that they just quit posting or finally go off on these people and then the bullied poster gets slapped instead of the bully.

You guys know what I'm taking about, poke the victim until they eventually yell back, they get in trouble and eventually go away from whatever it is the teams don't want posted, and then the teams just high five, job well done.

I saw it in the Fuku threads, I've seen it in the Ebola and Ferguson threads too recently, basically anything that puts TPTB in a bad light and "might" be enough to make people finally ask real questions and see what it happening to the world. Most of their arguments are based on semantics too. "It depends on what the definition of "is" is." kinda stuff.

They seem so determined to negate anything said that they refuse to address what was "actually" written or even the spirit of what is written if the attackee doesn't meet the teams standards of eloquence or research (or maybe hit a sensitive nerve). Or they slam literally every word someone says as unfounded, uneducated, flat out lies, or just ignorant. They just turn it into a giant circle jerk that drives most readers away and makes the posters who are being attacked not want to post anymore, again job well done.

There's a lot going on right now that may not be able to be confirmed, with Ebola and Ferguson especially, the media is only telling us what "they" want us to hear and sometimes local boots on the ground folk are ALL we are going to get real info from. Can these cases be "proven"? Well no, it is based on what local people are seeing or hearing and I'd hope most here are smart enough to filter the BS out themselves without "help".

And yet these posters will post dozens of posts in a tag team manner bashing those boots on the ground so vehemently that it is really just flat out bullying. It is usually when something hinky happens out in the real world too. Maybe on a locally reported or personally seen event or whatever.

I'd say they are purposefully trying to poo poo some stuff(paid), because frankly they seem so determined to discount every little thing and are so nasty and petty about it and the kind of people who in RL I'd have nothing to do with, but I don't want to give them that much credit heh. They are so far newish members to boot, who have so many posts in such a short time I swear they never step away from they keyboard.

The only good side to these folks are they keep the threads bumped lol. I just wish they'd
and make a few posts if they disagree and leave it at that, instead of pages and pages of smackdowns.

Good post btw thanks!

Lil

Respect seems like a very difficult thing for some people in day to day interactions let alone having the veil of anonymity draped over you on the internet.

I used to scratch my head wondering why people could be so nasty or be this way and that and realized it was just emotionally draining and went about my day.

I've noticed the same thing too, there's definitely an agenda being adhered to.

I think what we are seeing is the violent death throes of backward thinking.

Some people still think it is OK to be sexist, racist, or bigoted and that their "opinion" still matters in the modern world. The more time that goes by, the less people are willing to hear this kind of backwards thinking. This causes those with a bigoted mindset to lash out, group up, and do whatever they think they have to do to justify their way of thinking.

Give it time, before long there will no longer be room in the minds of humanity for blatant unwarranted hate and those that would try and perpetuate it will dissapear.

I think that some people, possibly even you OP, would like to make giving honest opinion against T & C rules.

I doubt that that is the OPs intention at all - I feel his/her intention is to quell the insulting and badgering that runs rampant - that is thoroughly unnecessary. It is just as simple to convey a point without having to insult someone; perhaps even easier.

Many people make it a point to degrade other posters to bolster their own influence over the thread - but this is only a detraction from the matter at hand, and deflects the entire thread away from finding resolution.

If your opinion is that I'm an idiot - keep it to yourself - it's not conducive to the determination of whether or not aliens exist, and it's thoroughly insulting to post in a public forum.

I, perhaps along with the original poster, might like to see a 'very loose' interpretation of a restriction on insulting other users. Sure, sometimes to make a point you have to play a little offensive to get someone to think about it - but this often gets pushed too far.

I think you pose a good point OP; just remember - in the face of ignorance, maintaining your composure is nearly more important than knowing your stuff.

I have stopped reading posts due to the arguments, name bashing and it has happened to me too. I do handle it myself and will call the person out but only once. After that I will completely ignore them but from my experience they will then go to someone else and start all over again.

I know who some of them are and I never respond to any of their post due to this very reason. I think it has gotten worse over the last year.

I agree with OP. I had a similar rant a few weeks ago. I am still very new but have found some members just seem to want to put people down for the sake of it and not for the purpose of an heated debate. I asked for some advice a few weeks ago with regard to game console and had people making lots of assumptions and being judgmental without any justification. I agree with another post on this thread that a lot of the behaviour is childish. There seems to be a battle of vocabulary sometimes as well as though this somehow comes across as intelligent. Half of the time things dont even make sense.

I am in my forties, intelligent and with a wealth of life experience so can handle people trying to sound clever however I think it can be quite offputting to people deciding whether or not to sign up as some stuff is like playground talk and can appear quite pretentious. Lets remember its OK to have an opinion on a topic its when the sole purpose is to belittle another poster on a personal level. We are all human on here there will be people who have lots of personal problems or feel isolated who just want to co nect with people who have similar interests and thoughts and who dontwant to go away feeling worse than when they switched on.

How people treat you is their Karma, how you react is yours

In my opinion, the debate forum is the standard and the reference point as to how members of ATS should interact with each other.

Should being the operative word.

In every tribe there are leaders and there are oxygen thieves and then there's the rest of us.

I come here every day and I know exactly who you are talking about.

My personal opinion of members is based primarily on their attitude towards others and secondarily their knowledge base and ability to engage in topics - the "holier than thou" crowd I place in the same category as politicians and lawyers so anyone who knows my posting history knows that that ain't real high - at all, and I simply will not interact with them.

The Mods do an awesome job of taking out the trash but, as you have correctly pointed out, they do rely on members using the alert system to assist.

It's quite simple.......the economy isn't that good, the price of everything we buy is skyrocketing while our wages don't keep up. Most of us hate the idiots in Washington DC, both parties included, and about 70% of Americans think we are going in the wrong direction. Healthcare costs are thru the roof and rising faster than our paychecks can keep up with as well.

So basically, you keep squeezing the neck of the American people and eventually you get the venom.

I've had this happen to me and I just ignore it. What bugs me though is I get frustrated reading the same few people chasing every single post in a thread and making it basically unreadable. When 2 or three or more people are responding to every poster with the same arguments over and over it's just ridiculous. And I feel sorry for who they attack too

So it isn't really about needing thicker skin, it's more about in 10+ years here I honestly have never seen it like this except maybe back after 9/11 (I hadn't joined yet back then obviously, but I was here reading). I'm also not talking about the normal bad behavior you get anywhere on the net, this is concerted and odd.

And when several dozen or more new members have close to or way over 1000 posts in a month or less from doing this over and over, that's just.. hinky. To me at least.

That's my take anyway.

Lil
