Sure are, and the main source has quite the quote

- EW - is what allows our smart weapons act as intelligent alien weapon - sleep. And rightly so, - said Deputy Prime Minister.

Oh, and CBS
CBS

In the midst of increasing East-West tensions over the crisis in Ukraine, a Russian jet made a pass of a U.S. Navy destroyer patrolling the western Black Sea.

A Pentagon spokesperson told CBS Radio that a Russian SU-24 fighter jet made several low altitude, close passes in the vicinity of the USS Donald Cook in international waters of the western Black Sea on April 12.

While the jet did not overfly the deck, Col. Steve Warren called the action "provocative and unprofessional."

The jet was one of two Russian aircraft in the vicinity -- the other flew at a higher altitude.

The close-flying jet came within a few thousand feet of the USS Donald Cook, a guided missile destroyer which was conducting a "routine mission" at the time.

The U.S. ship tried to contact the plane's cockpit, but received no response.

The Russian plane, which the U.S. says was unarmed, made at least 12 passes. This continued for about 90 minutes. The event ended without incident.

So lie or half truth?

And have you bothered with the Russian side of things? They're in piss poor shape, and have been for a long time now. They're improving, and are better than they were, but they still have years to go to get back to where they were at the end of the Cold War. They're still damn good in several fields, such as missiles, but between reading what their generals have said, and speaking to several of their pilots, they have a ways to go in some areas.

I would like to know if that many service people actually tried to leave active service and how someone would know that. You guys are probably right but it just tickled my fascination.

But just watch how fast the BRICS exchange takes off. Also they are getting more allies by the day. Plus the 900 pound elephant they are aligned with China and Iran.

Half truth. The flyby did happen, no one denies that. But the Cook wouldn't have done anything regardless.

if true than I think Russia made a big mistake by showing its hand

A Russian fighter pilot once defected to the west complete with his jet and once landed our engineers started to take the jet to bit and fell about laughing when they found glass values all over the jet and not transistors.

Well the laughing soon stopped when they realized why.

These glass values don't get taken out by an EMP so they had some catching up to do.

The puppets in the media are trying to make a big think about a few boats near Australia but the Americans who have a lot more boats/ships than Russia or China think they can go where they want and no one should say anything

You (USA) can poke the bear (Russia) in the eye but keep me (Europe) out of it and yes Turkey at least seems to be showing signs that they are tired of having USA military bases all over the place so lets home Europe wakes up too.

Well they would say that but who knows the truth because our government is not transparent, is at war with its own people with all the spying and quite often lies.

Don't they have some rules about anyone flying within XX miles of a military ship are entering a no fly zone and will be shot down or is that just for tin pot countries and civilian planes.

Eighteen months to three years is usually about as long as they stay a Captain of a ship that size. Then they move on to the next step in their advancement. Eighteen months is on the short side, unless this wasn't his first tour as a Captain. Somewhere along the line either to their first command, or after their first command they become instructors as some school. It helps improve their ability to command a ship.

The only rules are about flying directly over the deck of the ship. They usually tell any aircraft to stay a few miles clear of the ship to prevent any incidents. There's a treaty in place with Russia, and has been for a long time, that neither side will directly overfly ships belong to the other side. It's too easy to mistake a flyover for an attack run, and too much risk of something happening by accident.

Don't you think it would be stupid for the plane to make 12 low altitude passes over the ship if the weapon systems were working? Or was 'low altitude,' just added for the story. Do you guys notice Russia is getting more aggressive on multiple fronts...kinda frustrated with all the talking.

While still an FE I saw a half dozen fliers turn in their wing because of a long flight with some brutal turbulence.

Some kids think the military is like call of duty till they are in a dangerous situation, then their imagination gets the better of them.

In my experience one that demon is out its hard to get under control.

Why? They knew there was very little chance the US ship would do anything, and they didn't have any weapons to do anything. If the destroyer did something there was a very good chance of a reaction by Russia that would have severely damaged if not outright sank them.

The more passes they make, the more data they can collect on the radar and other systems.

At least the Phalanx CIWS has manual backup and can operate with its radar down.

It uses a FLIR camera system that can track heat sources.

There is also talk of putting a laser target system on it so it can operate radar emissions black and not give away the ships location.

AND with the sanctions and the price of oil it has become harder this year than many years past to spend the money to modernize.

Most of what Russia has put forward in their military arsenal over the years has come from observing US tech and then setting out to copy it...sometimes making it better but mostly lower grade copies much like China. So if Russia has such equipment the US most likely has the same or something better. It has been noticed Russia spending much more in the area of defense lately, but I don't believe they have surpassed us to the degree that they would pull something out of the bag like this early in the game, I agree with the others they would hold and wait for total surprise and little time to react.

This is interesting. The OP says it could be an EMP to shut down the electrical systems on the target. But the Arleigh Burke destroyers are designed with extensive shielding to be able to operate in an EMP environment. EMPs have been known about for a long time. The EMP would also effect the Su-24 Fencer which was carrying it. So that doesn't make a lot of sense.
The more complex a system is the more susceptible it is. That is very simplistic and sounds made up. Maybe the Russian plane jammed the radar somehow but jamming the radar on one destroyer is hardly amazing. In real life it would probably be shot down by the SM-2 missile system before it got close enough for the jamming to be effective. Notice the Su-24 was extremely close to the Arleigh Burke, flying within the SM-2 missile range would be extremely lethal for an Su-24 or any other non stealthy jet if shot at. I don't know the whole story or what really happened but it does tend to sound like propaganda and very unlikely. In this case if it is true, which I doubt, just use an IR stinger MANPAD and shoot the plane it's so close, problem solved.

They are never going to fight each other anyway I don't think, so it doesn't matter anyway. The US and Russia just show off their toys and that's all. I'm sure they both have some very capable secret tech.
