You have to heat up the battery to be able to charge it.

Imho there is too much focus on the whole solar power issue. The experiments are well underway as it seems. So it is doing what it is supposed to do.

So Philae is drilling now:
twitter.com...

The science guy on the radio said they may not have enough battery powerr to send the data from the drilled materials back to Earth!
He said this is because the drill and the oven which heats up the drilled dust to analyse chemical makeup(which is the valuable data),take a lot of battery juice.

He reckons about 10pm UK time is when they get to find out if there is enough battery left to send the data..thats in 5 hrs from now,so check the twitter feed around then folks.

Imagine how frustrating it would be if the drill and oven works, but they don't get to see the data...Man I hope that does not happen.

Here go two 'noteworthy' updates from twitter:

They're obviously trying to reposition Philae:

Looking good so far ... but what a thriller this is!!

ETA: Philae's rotation by 35 degrees was successful!

Also my rotation was successful (35 degrees). Looks like a whole new comet from this angle

Sweet. Looks like we might be due for some amazing images.

Today has been great!
The drill did its job,and hopefully the on board lab data will reveal loads about what the comet is made of.
Someone on the radio said the drill would go 25cm deep if it deployed correctly-thats deep enough to get at all the suff that hasn't been blasted by space radiation,so it should be very interesting to see.
On Sky news a while ago they said that Philae has repositioned itself so more sunlight hits the panels, although not enough-maybe that will change when it gets nearer the sun though.

Can't wait to see the next pic!

Philae's destiny documented via Rosetta's satellite imagery:
Source

The science data is uploaded and Philae's primary mission accomplished. With Philae now in idle mode there's just a very slight chance of being reactivated at a later stage (provided that the batteries are not frozen or completely discharged).

Looking forward to what Philae's data package is going to reveal (hope it actually managed to drill 30cm into the ground, despite sitting on a slope)!

Yeah it would be cool to know if the theory about water on earth its origin being from comets is true. I hope the drill was good enough, it seems they got the data from the drill being send to them.

Hydrocarbons, too. How much of our oil/gas is from compressed dinosaurs and plants, and how much came in on comets?
