this is aimed at those of us who believe this will be long term, if you believe "it'll never happen" or that it will be short term-lets say 6 months maximum and then its "business as usual" then read no further. now, a FAST collapse with a large die off will leave plenty of stuff lying around for a comparatively small amount of survivors to use, a SLOW collapse-a domino effect-which is what I believe will happen, will leave more people alive so any resources will be used up quicker. so what then? revert to the stone age? that may happen for those that come after, as they wont have access to the raw materials as these have already been mined out, I believe we(especially in the UK) will revert to a pre industrialisation, agriculture based, self sufficient/ subsistence farming type lifestyle. those that can adapt that is, those that cant will go under.

i believe something like this will happen some day .

the truth is we need something to happen , like something outside this world to bring humanity together .

Alien invasion would do it

a reply to: Walsh I believe this will happen,(not the alien invasion that's pure science fiction) and the way the world is going these days its probably a lot closer than most people think.

We wont need 'raw materials' they are already refined, your auto, that bus, pots and pans, tool shops, there must be several kilo's of tools in every walmart, tool shed, pickup, panel van, you name it, books on every subject in your local library, take the alternator out of your auto and bolt a small propeller to it, and you have a, not always constant, 12 volt supply...

a reply to: pikestaffread my OP again, I said stuff would run out the more survivors there are, even if there is enough for the immediate survivors what of future generations (if any)?? the stuff lying about gets used up then there is no more. I repeat my question: WHAT THEN??

a reply to: ATF1886 marauders/ raiders depend on where you live and how far away your nearest city is, its city/urban dwellers who will be your problem, living a long way away from any large city is definitely a bonus for me, there are resources even out in the countryside its just a matter of knowing where they are, scouting that now before shtf and making a note of it on a map is definitely a positive thing to do. my point is what will you or your decendants do when all the stuff lying about is used up, with shtf no more will be made/refined/mined so at some point its all gone, do you think the human race can evolve and adapt to this concept or will humans just cease to exist??

Im in the process of moving to a less urbanized area my friend is a real estate agent who believes in shtf which is a plus mind you I moved out of Miami which was a cesspool I'm in a smaller county now well I understand your post you mean the processing of minerals and fabrics and so on I guess the best thing to do is to study learn and practice these techniques which will be an added plus in any shtf scenario remember when we let Mother Nature takes her course all resources start to renew themselves a reply to: bigpaul

I still be believe those that survive will revert to a basic agricultural lifestyle, the cities will be left to rot and ruin, the present globilisation/consumer society is just communism by a different name, we need to break those chains and get back to a more basic land based society where we have 100% employment and no welfare state, benefits wont exist and everyone works. it will take time post event but I see no point in the idea that most people have when they say they want what went before the collapse, whats the point of that? that's probably what caused the collapse in the first place.

Don't quit so easily. "Stuff" is not going to be used up anytime near soon after a total collapse. Those things that disappear quickly will be food, petrol, and sadly bullets used to keep others at bay from your situation.

The hardware of metal things is not going to dissolve or be used up by people using hand tools to refashion that (raw) material into equipment for sustaining themselves. In fact, we can assume just the opposite. Think in terms of people of the woods using the raw material of trees, animal tissue and shaped rocks to fashion bows and arrows. Such as it will be with, for example, making recycled bicycles into human-powered push plows or lawn mowers large and small into personal "wagons." (See old Mother Earth News mags.)

Yes, most will die, especially in the colder zones where agriculture is not so idea. The horrible truth is that the survivors may only survive by doing the unthinkable. The only sure way to survival is to adapt, think like a hunter, be proficient with weapons (guns and bows/arrows), etc.

all I know is, survival will be much harder than the prepared think

and impossible for the unprepared

just because u are ready, don't think it won't involve tears and blood still

Half of the world will die when the medications and foods stop coming.
Then half of the rest will die when the rioting starts.
Then half of them will die from disease and suisides.
That should take about a year.
Raw materials ( wood, iron, copper) will not be a problem for the few that remain.
Seeds that are not hybrids will be a big problem, as will salt.

I agree totally go back in time where people had to work for what they need not want it's the people that have there hands out for the free stuff that have ruined this country, world and so on a lot of people fear the not having the comforts of now a days but in reality what it is is A farce I'm young with a lot of wisdom and I talk to a lot of people older in particular the people in there 60's to 80's and I hear the stories of when everything was small simple and easy I think that the world has grown in technology faster than what it can handle we've gotten lazy we depend on cars and other forms of transportation to solve what we were given legs for... I can go on and on and on but we obviously know all of this what would be a start would be for people who think like you and me to start communities preparing mentally physically for what is to come to show metallurgy sowing farming but the sad part and reality is most people are busy worrying about how big there house is and how cool there car is those will be the first to go...a reply to: bigpaul

a reply to: ATF1886exactly, there will be a big die off of the unprepared and the unwilling, the numbers will be decimated by starvation, disease, suicides and the just plain stupid accidents, within 6 months( a year at most) the population will be a fraction of what it was. most people will not be able or want to adapt and will go the way of the do-do and the dinosaur, only those that can adapt and thrive in the new reality will survive.
