What i am saying is that those mothers who knew they are pregnant and choose to drink should be charged of abuse. They knew drinking could harm their child but even then they chose to drink. FAS is not genetic its organic. FAS non drinking adults can give a birth to normal kids.
Saw a BBC document which interviewed binge drinking pregnant women, they all knew what can happen to the fetus and were fully informed about FAS in maternity clinic, these mothers said in documentary that estimate of getting FAS child is 1.5 to 1000 babies so they all were in conclusion it won´t happen to them. We know what alcohol does to fetus and its not pretty. Should they really get "free card" and held innocent in these cases.. NO. Should those people who drink and drive and kill or injure others when they drive under influence be given "get free" card also. NO.
Very similar all of those drinking people knew exactly what they were doing and knew exactly what might happen.

Every case is different i am talking about binge mothers who knew what they were doing. FAS is still much studied and some say it not only first trimester when things in the womb can get wrong. Babies brains evolve all the time and for example fetus achieve dreaming in third trimester. Binge mothers when their water breaks their amniotic fluid even smells alcohol.

These mothers should be charged and make them pay, not many of them actually can keep their babies as they are unable to deal with a FAS child so many kids end up to adoption. What i am saying these birth mothers who were doing this delibarately should be involved in kids future in financial way at least to help a bit with decent future to these kids.

And I know what drugs do to children that are born drug dependent and it doesn't stop at birth if affect them in their school years, should drugs and alcohol bee used to charge this mothers and put them in jail. But how about those that are junkies that already depend on government assistant or that are homeless.

I imagine that many will say yes, but the sad truth about this particular mothers is that they are not your regular type of mothers to be but many get pregnant without even knowing when and how and by who.

It happens a lot in the south, the children are taken away because the mothers can not even take care of themselves.

So while is a good idea to charge mothers that knowingly injure their unborn child while in uterus what the penalty will be when most of them are women that are habitual users and many homeless, this group is bigger than the group that you may claim of knowingly doing this to their unborn fetus..

Now, this reality, at least in my neck of the woods.

I am agreeing with you, they should be charged, as I said, criminal negligence at best, willful assault at worst. On your comment re' genetics, it is a well proven fact that excessive alcohol consumption by the mother during pregnancy alters DNA in the fetus and that alteration cannot be undone. FAS non-drinking adults still pass on their altered genetic material, it doesn't get fixed because they copulate with another non-drinking FAS victim or a person with normal DNA. We adopted an FAS/FAE child and had a child naturally, they were like night and day. I have 30 plus years of experience dealing with FAS/FAE day to day, so I kinda know a little ;-) Every time I see a pregnant woman drinking alcohol, I do tend to spout off because they have no idea that what they do today, tomorrow and the next until the child is born, will effect 10's if not hundreds of people to their detriment after the child is born.

Cheers - Dave

You're right Dave, and it's often this point that arises in many topics on here: I feel society has created many problems and no way of dealing with them.

I'm generally all about freedom but I'm really tired of people doing really stupid things while procreating. If a mother does something that harms the child, the kid has to live with that forever. It's not just about individual rights for the mother where the unborn child is concerned.

I get really irritated when dirt poor people deliberately reproduce and blame the rich because their offspring have to live in the world they knew they were bringing them into.
